Jean Pig-Dupuy

Jean Pig-Dupuy (Niort, 1674 - Rochefort, 1757) . French Doctor. Corresponding to the Academy of Science.

Wire of a doctor originating in La Rochelle and become mayor of Niort, Jean Pig-Dupuy accepted his rank of doctor at the medical college of Toulouse. He settles as ordinary doctor of the king with the La Rochelle where he gains a solidre reputation.

At this point in time the intendant of the navy, Michel Bégon, attracts it with him. In 1704, Jean Pig-Dupuy becomes doctor as a second with the wearing of Rochefort, then first doctor in 1712. He founds the first school of naval health (school of anatomy and surgery, 1715).

Its fame leads it to become corresponding Academy of Science (1726) and the count of Maurepas, Secretary of State of the navy, makes displacement since Versailles to Rochefort to attend two lessons of anatomy of the doctor, in 1727. Pig-Dupuy has the favors of the Court. In 1753, it is anobli. This social rise is concretized by the marriage of his/her daughter whom it gives to the chief of squadron, Marquis of Estenduère.

The library of the old medical school preserves three volumes of its courses exempted at its pupils. On ministerial decision, they had been diffused in the other arsenals of the kingdom (Brest and Toulon). In spite of its knowledge to make, it cannot anything against the epidemic Scorbut squadron the baillif de Piosin, brought back in 1745 since Louisbourg (royal island). the hospital loses then 150 surgeons, apothecaries and chaplains, while Rochefort counts 3.000 victims. The load of doctor and principal of naval health is not a sinecure in a city, qualified by its contemporaries of " tomb of the navy ".
