Jean Népomucène
Jean Népomucène (Pomuk, current Nepomuk, Bohemia, 1340 - March 20th 1393), Catholic priest and Martyr. The sources available on this name possibly describe two distinct people.
In 1373, a certain Jean Népomucène, wire of shepherd, was ordered priest and entered the chancellery archiépiscopale. It climbs little by little the levels and in 1390, was promoted archdeacon of Sasz and canon of the Cathédrale Saint-Guy of Prague. In 1393, the archbishop made his general vicar of it. It entered quickly in conflict with Venceslas IV of Bohemia. This one prohibits with an abbey of its kingdom to elect a new abbot. Its plan was to make abbey church a cathedral, and to give the seat of it to the one of its favorites. Jean Népomucène opposed it highly. When the abbot in title died, the monks held an election. Furious, Wenceslas made throw the general vicar and the new abbot in prison. After torturebeing tortured by fire, Jean Népomucène was thrown in the Moldau.
According to the Chronica regum Romanorum of Thomas Ebendorfer († 1464) and the Yearly Bohemorum (1541), Jean was the confessor of the Jeanne queen, woman of Wenceslas IV. Jean had criticized the king and had refused to betray the confessions of the queen, that Wenceslas suspected of adultery. he was tortured and thrown in Moldau.
He was béatifié in 1721, then canonized by the pope Benoît XIII in 1729, like martyr of the seal of confession. It is celebrated the May 16th, in particular in a small vault being dedicated him to the street of the Rope manufacture with Montignies-on-Sambre in Belgium. He is the owner of Bohemia.
The tomb silver of saint Jean Népomucène is located in the Cathédrale Saint-Guy of Prague. It is completed in 1736 on a project of Fischer von Erlach.
