Jean Mistler

Jean Mistler , born in 1897 with Sorèze (Tarn), and dead the November 11th 1988, was a French writer.

After his studies with Sorèze, Jean Mistler, of Alsatian origin by his father (his family left Alsace in 1871), prepares the contest of the National university to the Lycée Henri IV, where it has as professor of philosophy Alain. Mobilized in artillery in 1916, it withdraws war of pacifist solids convictions. It is allowed at the Teacher training school in 1919, and is received first with German aggregation the following year.

Rather than to teach, it chooses to postulate at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs for an assignment abroad. He named with the legation from France to Hungary, making function of cultural attache at the same time as he teaches at the university of Budapest. In 1925 is integrated into the Quay of Orsay (Service of Works), where it succeeds Paul Morand.

It starts a political career starting from 1928 when it is elected Député of the Aude under the label radical socialist. He will be under-secretary of State at the Art schools and several times minister as from 1932. In 1934, whereas he is Minister for the postal and telecommunications authorities in the government of Albert Sarraut, this informed music lover creates the symphony orchestra of the radio, ancestor of the Orchestra of Radio-France. As from 1936, it will chair the commission of the Foreign affairs.

Parallel to his political activities, Jean Mistler had begun a career of writer, with the publication of Châteaux in Bavaria (1925) and of Ethelka (1929).

The July 10th, 1940, like chair commission of the vote for all the House of Commons, it is him which presents to the National Assembly, at this meeting in Vichy, the unique article entrusting the full powerss to the Pétain marshal for purposes to prepare a new constitution project. What will be worth to him, with the Release, to be called " the naufragor of République" (title that it could easily divide with many others)…

After having occupied, like a penitence, a station with the Editions of the Rock after the war, he will become then general secretary then president of the House of the French book (Ministry for Foreign Affairs), and finally, of 1964 to 1969, director of the department of general literature to the Librairie Hatchet. Parallel to these activities, Jean Mistler regularly gave chronicles of literary or musical criticism to the Dawn . He had been elected in 1966 with the French Academy.

Died the November 11th 1988, Jean Mistler is buried in the family vault of Auriol with Sorèze.
