Jean Maitron , born the December 17th 1910, dead the November 16th 1987, is a historian French specialist in the Labor movement.

Pioneer of the working history in France, it makes it enter to the university and gives him its archivistic bases, with the creation of the Center of history of the trade unionism to the Sorbonne. Its publications include reference books, in particular the biographical Dictionnaire of the labor movement French , continued after its death and usually called “Maitron”, and a history of the Anarchisme. Jean Maitron founded and directed two reviews: Topicality of the history then the Social movement .

In 1996, the Fédération of state education creates the Jean-Maitron price which rewards a work for student who prolongs his work. A collection of books of social history also bears its name.

Its work is continued by a team directed by Claude Pennetier, within the framework of the Center of social history of the XXe century (CNRS/Université of Paris I). In 2006, a new series of the dictionary, envisaged in twelve volumes, was born. Entitled biographical Dictionary, labor movement, social movement , it will cover the period 1940-1968.
