Jean Louis de Nogaret of Valette

Jean Louis de Nogaret , lord of Valette and Caumont, Duke of Epernon (Castle of Caumont, May 1554 - Loaches, January 13rd 1642), military French, it was one of the nice S of the king Henri III of France, called “the half king”.
He is the son of Jean de Nogaret of Valette, lord of the castle of Caumont in Gascogne, and of Jeanne de Saint Lary de Bellegarde.
His/her father and his grandfather, Pierre de Nogaret, sior of Valette combatirent at the time of the Guerres of Italy. It was thus quite naturally that Jean-Louis embraces the military career. Junior by Gascogne, it took part quickly in the battles of the wars of religion: Mauvezin with his/her father (1570) it saves the life, then with the unfruitful seat of the La Rochelle and with the victorious seats of the Charity-on-Loire and Issoire (1577).
It is at the time of the seat of the La Rochelle that it meets the Duke of Anjou, future Henri III of France. Nogaret entered then in December 1578 the very restricted circle of the close relations of Henri III of France. It became then with the duke of Merry, nearest collaborator to the king.
Extremely of its influence near the king, it is named, main camp of the regiment of Champagne (1579), Gouverneur of Fère taken again in turn with the troops of Cop (1580), general Colonel of the Infantry (which becomes for him a large office of the crown), Duc of Épernon, Pair of France and adviser of State (1581), First gentleman of the Room of the King (1582), Chevalier of the Ordre of the Holy Spirit, governor of the Boulonnais and Loches, of Metz and of the Metz-native Country, the citadel of Lyon (1583), Knight of the Orders of the king (1584), Governor of Provence (1586), and with died of the the duke of Merry (1587), Admiral de France, governor of Normandy, Caen and the Harbor of Grace.
It had to leave the court, “sacrificed by Henri III to the requirements of the members of a league in the summer of 1588. Withdrawn in its government of Aunis and Saintonge, he wrote to the king letters very subjected, while showing that he represented a military force and policy. He was recalled to the spring of 1589. ”
Married in 1587 with Marguerite de Foix-Candale (1567-1593), it had three wire:
- Henri, duke of Foix-Candale (1591-1639),
- Bernard, duke of Epernon (1592-1661), and
- Louis, cardinal of Valette (1593-1639).
It also had four other children:
- Louise (girl of Diane d' Estrées),
- Louis, bishop of Mirepoix, then of Carcassonne,
- Bernard, prior of Bellefonds, and
- Jean-Louis, known as the Knight of Valette.
After the assassination of Henri III in 1589, he was opposed to crowning Henri de Navarre, tried to install an independent government in Provence, but was obliged to submit itself to the king, and took up his duties until the assassination of this one, in which one suspected it of being implied. There remained close to Marie de Médicis but enemy of Concini. It carried out the repression of the insurrections Huguenot are in Aquitaine and was named military governor of Guyenne in 1622. It will remain it until in 1638.
Enemy of Concini which ensures regency with Marie de Médicis, it is isolated capacity by the Cardinal of Richelieu.
At the time where Louis XIII, young king de France who makes stop and to assassinate Concini (1617), he subdues the insurrections huguenotes in Aquitaine then is named military governor of Guyenne in 1622. It is established then with the Château of Cadillac builds since 1599.
Its execrable reports/ratios with Henri of Sourdis (brother and successor of cardinal François of Sourdis) which requires its excommunication (1634) after the duke of Épernon struck it in public, are worth to him to be exiled.
It gives up its role of governor of Guyenne only in 1638 and dies in disgrace with Loches on January 13rd, 1642 at the 88 years age.
