Jean Leclant

Jean Leclant , born with Paris, the August 8th 1920, is an orientalist and French Egyptologist, specialist in the history and Pharaonic civilization, especially, he is also specialist in meroitic civilization, the religious history, the history of art, in iconography and ethnography.

Entered with the National university in 1940, it is aggregate of geography in 1945. From 1946 to 1948, it is attached of research to the National center of the scientific research and operations manager near the national museums. From 1948 to 1952, he is member of the French Institut of oriental archeology of Cairo (IFAO). In 1952, it is in charge of the creation of the Service of Antiquities of Ethiopia. In 1953 he is graduate pupil of the practical École of the high studies, 5th section. From 1953 to 1963, it is Part-time lecturer, then professor in 1955, at the University of Strasbourg, where it becomes the same year arts doctor. From 1963 to 1979, he is professor of Egyptology to the Sorbonne and 1964 to 1990, director of studies at the practical School of the high studies, 5th section. From 1979 to 1990, he is professor of Egyptology to the Collège de France and since 1992, conservative of the Villa Kérylos.

He was also director of the Mission of the experts archeologists in Ethiopia (1952-1956), of the excavations of Saqqarah (since 1963) and of the French archaeological Mission in Sudan (Soleb, 1960-1978; Sedeinga, since 1979). It carried out many excavations in Egypt: with Karnak, Saqqarah and Tanis; in Sudan: in Soleb and Sedeinga; in Ethiopia: with Axoum.

Distinctions

He is Large-Officer of the Legion of honor; Commander in the National order of the Merit; Commander in the Order of the academic Palms; Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters. Elected official, on May 3rd, 1974, ordinary member of the Academy of the inscriptions and the humanities, with the armchair of Jacques Vandier. Perpetual secretary, on June 24th, 1983.
