Jean Lecanuet

Jean Adrien François Lecanuet , born the March 4th 1920 with Rouen (Seine-Maritime), dead the February 21st 1993 with Neuilly-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine), was a Politician French.

Biography

Born in a very modest medium, it was directed towards literary studies. It is graduate higher learning of letters, and at 22 years becomes young person aggregate of France (of Philosophie in 1942). He teaches as a professor of philosophy to Douai and Lille.

Since 1943, while continuing to teach the day, it takes part in the Résistance during the Second world war and enters clandestinity. In August 1944, it is stopped with the commando who had just made jump the Lille-Brussels railway, and manages to escape with complicity from Polish built-in from force in the German army.

With the Release, he is general inspector with the ministry for information. Then under the IVe Republic, it is several times principal private secretary of ministers MRP of Information, the Merchant navy, the Nation's economy, the Interior and Finances (11 stations in 10 years).

He is president of MRP between 1963 and 1965. In 1965, he becomes candidate with the presidency of the Republic (supported by Paul Reynaud). Its candidature contributes to the setting in ballot of the Général de Gaulle. It obtains 3.777.120 votes (either 15,6  %)

In 1966, it founds the democratic Center, difficult way when the way of voting supports the bipolarisation. Thus in 1972, it founds with Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber the reforming Mouvement. It negotiates with Pierre Messmer desistances which allow the success of the majority the legislative elections of 1973.

It takes an active part in the electoral campaign of 1974 in favor of Valery Giscard d'Estaing and becomes then president of the UDF of 1978 to 1988. It makes of UDF under its presidency a strong party, well established locally, very European and asserting a moderate liberal policy.

Jean Lecanuet is buried with Saint-Martin-with-Boscherville.

A college of the town of Rouen bears its name. One of the main streets of the town of Rouen bears its name (in the past street Thiers).
