Jean Langlais

Jean Langlais is a Organiste, improviser and Compositeur French of the 20th century (1907 - 1991).

Born the 15 February 1907 with Fontenelle (35), and blind man as of the two years age, it makes studies with the National institute of the Young Blind men of Paris. It learns there the Violon, the Piano, the writing and the Orgue with André Marchal. Admitted in 1927 in the class of organ of Marcel Dupre with the Academy of Paris, it learns also the improvisation with Charles Tournemire and, with Olivier Messiaen, follows the courses of composition of Paul Dukas. It receives there in 1930 the first price of Orgue, then in 1931 the Grand Prix of Execution and Improvisation of the Friends of the Organ. Organist of 1945 with 1987 with Holy-Clotilde with Paris, it teaches in his turn at the Institute of the young blind men and the Schola Cantorum. Considered improviser, he was also a prolific type-setter. If the music of organ and the liturgical music constitute the most significant part of its catalog, it devoted a share as of its activity to the instrumental music and vocal profane. It gives also many concerts, in particular 300 recitals in the United States between 1952 and 1981. The many pages of organ which it composed were worth him a celebrity in the musical world. He dies the 8 May 1991 with Paris.
