Jean Léchelle , born in 1760 and dead the November 11th 1793, is a general of the French revolution.

He was fencing master to Saintes when the French revolution bursts. Being enlisted in the national guards of the Charente-Lower , it serves in 1791 as lieutenant-colonel with the first battalion of volunteers of the Charente.

The August 17th 1793, it is promoted general, commander-in-chief of the Armée with the coasts of Brest during the period extending from the October 6th to the October 27th 1793. Protected by Bouchotte, Minister for the war, it is called, the September 30th 1793 with the command as a chief of the army of the West. Although deprived of education, it obtains successes with Mortagne and the Bataille of Cholet; in accordance with the instructions of the Committee of public hello and to the decrees of the Convention, it sets fire to and devastates completely these regions. But it is beaten with the Bataille of Entrammes (October 1793), where it loses more than ten thousand men: insulted by its own soldiers, he is shown by the representatives on mission in the Vendée. Merlin of Thionville the fact of stopping and of leading to Nantes, where he dies in prison at the end of a few days, for a badly cleared up reason (sorrow or poison).
