Jean Knoertzer

Jean Knoertzer is a realizer French of cartoon films.

Most known of its films is Itaf telling the friendship between Itaf, a Dromadaire and Joan, a young boy. This film obtained the “money Clap” of the festival of Sens.

Jean Knoertzer used the traditional technique of the celluloide or concealment . It is about a plastic sheet on which the drawing is reproduced with ink on the recto, and colors with the back. On a bench titrates, each celluloide is filmed in front of a decoration, image by image, the camera. To carry out one minute of film, 720 celluloides should be carried out. The production of Itaf was rather long. Three weeks of turning were necessary. Certain plans including/understanding of the Travelling S required one day of turning to obtain 10 seconds of Film to the screen.

The adventures of Itaf and Joan continue since a second chapter was carried out.

The film Léonard is funniest of all. It is the history of Léonard, a painter, who decides to carry out his more beautiful fabric. The decorations with the watercolour, are signed by Hoa Considering, known for its tables using the technique of painting on lacquer.

Sunday is a pretty tale on misfortunes of a nanny and her pram. The decorations are always also splendid.

A technical recall

For several years, the software of setting color and compositing have developed for the creation of series for television. They allow to gouacher the characters more quickly, and the effects such as the movements of camera or the reliefs are much easier.

It is today the technique which Jean Knoertzer uses for the series in cartoon Junior animation is always carried out with the hand but the setting colors, the dollies are created by data processing. The series " Junior" thus profit from effects of multiplan difficult to obtain by the traditional technique.

Jean Knoertzer works on a new series animated numerically.

A collector

The celluloïdes being used in the manufacturing process, they became objects snuffed by the collectors.

At the beginning, the market of the celluloïdes especially developed in the United States. Galleries were created, the auctions multiplied. The parts more the appraisals are especially the documents related to films of the Disney studios.

The market then extended to other countries of which Japan. Since years, the Japanese studios have impressive stocks on their series and of the feature-length films. In France, several specialized stores in the Japanese products tried to create a market. But the request did not really follow. There exists too much of celluloids for a Japanese series to consider that they are rare!!!

There exist various types of documents.

The original documents are those having really been used for the manufacture of films.

The limited editions are reproductions carried out either in the form of serigraphy or or with old. This type of edition is proposed either:

because all the documents of the time were destroyed,

parce quils became too expensive,

because the film of origin was carried out entirely numerically (cf the Prince of Egypt of Dreamworks, the voyage of Chihiro , the travelling Castle of the studio Ghibli…).

Jean Knoertzer has an original documentation of various countries (France, the United States, Japan, Bulgaria…) and of various types (cellulos, layouts, backgrounds, douga…) of Walt Disney, Rene Laloux, Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Astérix
