Jean Ier d\' Apremont

Jean d' Apremont , of a Lorraine noble family, was bishop of Verdun of 1216 with 1224, then bishop of Metz of 1224 with 1238. It was wire of Geoffroy Ier, lord of Apremont and Elisabeth de Dampierre.

Elected official bishop of Metz in 1224, it organized the diocese in episcopal principality by limiting the ambitions of the middle-class men, but its actions will not be followed by its successors who will exert their authority in the diocese apart from the town of Metz. During its episcopate, it had to intervene in the succession of Gertrude, countess of Dabo and of Metz, and recovered the episcopal county.

It encountered difficulties of starting again religious enthusiasm, the clergy not taking up its duties more: canons were often absent from diocese, priests devoted themselves to the magic and certain monks did not observe any more their wishes. It tried to cure it by organizing local councils, in 1228 and 1238, but which had only little success.

He was opposed to the inhabitants of Metz, to the duke Mathieu II of Lorraine and to the count Henri II of Bar at the time of the Guerre of the Friends of 1231 to 1234.
