Jean Ier (pope)

Saint Jean Ier , born in Tuscan, with Populonia, or His, or in the small castle of Serena (completely destroyed today), close to the village of Chiusdino, towards 470, pope of the August 15th 523 with the May 18th 526. Its 2 years and 9 months reign. He is regarded as a Martyr by the catholics and is celebrated on May 27th.

The king Ostrogoth arien Théodoric Large the sent the pope against his liking in Byzance so that it tries to make soften an edict of the emperor Justin against the arianism. It is the first pope received in Constantinople. The reception is cordial, but its embassy near the emperor is not crowned success. On his return to Rome, Jean was stopped by Théodoric which suspectait it to have plotted against him in Byzance. He was retained with Ravenne where he died.

Its body was transported to Rome and is today in the Basilique Saint-Pierre.

In art, one represents it behind the bars of a prison or in company of a Diacre or a sub-deacon.
