Jean IV of Portugal
Jean IV of Portugal , known as Jean the Restorer (port. : João IV ), born the March 18th 1604 in Vila Viçosa, dead the November 6th 1656 with Lisbon.
It was initially duke of Bragance (1630 - 1640), under the name of Jean II , succeeding his father below.
In 1640, following the Portuguese revolt against the king Philippe IV of Spain. Jean II of Bragance saw himself offering the Portuguese throne, in his capacity as descendant of the king Jean Ier d' Aviz by a bastard line. He was king de Portugal of 1640 with 1656.
He was the son of Théodose II of Bragance (1568 - 1630), duke of Bragance of 1583 with 1630), and of Anne de Velasco (dead in 1607).
The January 12th 1633, in Elvas, it married Marie-Louise de Guzmán (1613 - 1666), girl of Jean de Guzmán (1579 - 1638), duke of Medina Sidonia, and of Jeanne de Sandoval (nonknown dates of life).
Of this union are resulting:
- Théodose of Portugal (1634 - 1652)
- Catherine of Portugal (1638 - 1705), married in 1662 Charles II (1630 - 1685), king d' Angleterre and of Scotland of 1660 with 1685 - without surviving posterity. It was regent of Portugal (1704).
- Alphonse VI of Portugal (1643 - 1683), king de Portugal of 1656 with 1683, married in 1666 Marie Francoise of Savoy-Nemours (1646 - 1683) - Without posterity (they would have divorced, Marie Francoise of Savoy becoming the woman of the following brother. To check)
- Pierre II of Portugal (1648 - 1706), king de Portugal of 1683 with 1706, married in 1668 Marie Francoise of Savoy above, then in 1687 Marie-Sophie de Palatinat-Neuburg (1666 - 1699).
