Jean IV Lascaris

Jean IV Doukas Lascaris was Byzantine emperor of Nicée of 1258 with 1261, born in 1250, died in 1305, wire of Theodore II, emperor of Nicée, and Helene of Bulgaria.

He is still minor when he goes up on the throne of Nicée, in August 1258, with for regent Georges Muzalon, former adviser of his father. If the aristocracy had had to lend oath to Muzalon, this one nevertheless was massacred a few days later at the time of funerals of Theodore II. A palace revolution entrusted the regency of the Empire of Nicée to the young general Michel Paléologue (future Byzantine emperor Michel VIII Paleologist).

The day of Christmas 1258, Jean IV was crowned emperor with Nicée at the same time as Michel Paléologue (who was however crowned in first, with his Théodora wife, thus marking his precedence of the young person Jean IV).

August 15th 1261, Michel VIII was crowned Byzantine emperor in the Holy-Sophie basilica of Constantinople. A few months later, on his order, Jean IV had the eyes burst in order to more be able to claim with the throne. He was then relegated in a castle to the south of the Marmara Sea where he died in 1305.

His/her sister Eudoxie Lascaris prolonged her name in the history by marrying Pierre, count de Vintimille. His/her other sister, Marie Lascaris, married Nicéphore I {{er}} of Epire.
