With died of his/her father in 1316, the principality of Werle-Güstrow was divided, Jean II accepted Werle-Güstrow, his brother, Jean III of Mecklembourg-Werle-Goldberg accepted the Werle-Goldberg. In 1337, was born the line Werle-Güstrow, a branch junior by the line of Mecklembourg-Werle.

Jean II of Mecklembourg-Werle-Güstrow belongs to the second branch (Mecklembourg-Werle) resulting from the first branch of the Maison of Mecklembourg. This second line died out with Guillaume de Mecklembourg-Werle-Güstrow in 1436.
