Jean III of Portugal
Jean III , the piles (in Portuguese João III , O Piedoso ), (Lisbon, June 6th, 1502 - Lisbon, June 11th 1557) was the fifteenth king Portugal. Born in Lisbon, he was the son of the king Emmanuel Ier of Portugal by his wife, Marie, girl of the king Ferdinand and the queen Isabelle of Spain. Jean III succeeded his father in 1521.
The marriage of his/her sister Isabelle of Portugal with the king Charles Quint made it possible to the king to consolidate his alliance with the Spain and the Germanic Roman Holy roman Empire. To reinforce its bonds with the Spain, he married in 1525 Catherine de Castille, younger sister by Charles Quint, in the town of Crato. They had nine children, but the majority died young people.
