Jean III of Brittany
Jean III the Good (born the March 8th 1286 in Châteauceaux, current Champtoceaux and dead the April 30th 1341 with Caen), was duke of Brittany (1312 - 1341), and Count de Richmond (1334-1341).
He was the son of Arthur II of Brittany, duke of Brittany, and Marie of Limoges, viscountess de Limoges, his first wife.
Biography
As of its advent, it tried to dispute the legitimacy of the marriage between his father and Yolande de Dreux, then started a long lawsuit against this one about the heritage of Arthur II. In 1315, it took part in a campaign of Louis X Hutin against Frandre. It was faithful to kings de France and fought at the side of Philippe VI of Valois to the Bataille of Cassel (1328), where it was wounded.
In 1316, it modified its armorial bearings with the profit of one ecu hermine lime pit which is still nowadays of use to represent Brittany.
Without encumbered child but of a half-brother (wire of his mantle hedge) for heir apparent, it was tempted to bequeath to its death the duchy of Brittany to the royal field. Its subjects were opposed to it, and it Maria then her niece Jeanne de Penthièvre with Charles of Blois, nephew of the king de France Philippe VI.
In 1338, it sent its fleet to the Lock in support of that of king de France, but those were destroyed by the English. He died in Caen in 1341 while returning from Flanders.
Its refusal to organize its succession caused with its death the War of succession of Brittany.
Matrimonial note
In 1297, it married Isabelle de Valois (1292 † 1309), girl of Charles de Valois and Marguerite of Anjou.
