Jean III Sigismond de Brandebourg , (in German Johann III Sigmund von Brandenburg), born the November 8th 1572 with the Market, deceased the December 23rd 1619 with Berlin.

It was voter of Brandebourg of 1608 with 1619, duke of Prussia of 1618 with 1619.

Marriage and descent

In 1594, Jean III Sigismond de Brandebourg married Anne of Prussia (1576 - 1625), (girl of Albert Frederic of Prussia.

Eight children were born from this union:

  • Anne de Brandebourg (1598 - 1659), in 1614, it married the duke Frederic of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel († 1634)

  • Catherine de Brandebourg (1602 - 1649), in 1626, it married prince Gabriel II Bethlen of Transylvania († 1630). Widow, it married in 1639 François of Saxony († 1660)

Biography

In 1608, after the death of his/her father Jean III Sigismond became voter of Brandebourg. In 1611, by gratitude towards its professor Karl Friedrich von Bordelius, Jean III Sigismond gave him Castrop-Rauxel. He became duke of Prussia in 1618. Jean III Sigismond de Brandebourg was very influenced by his grandfather.

Jean III Sigismond de Brandebourg obtained by the treaty of Xanten signed the November 12th 1614: Ravensberg, County of Marck and the duchy of Clèves.

In 1616, victim of an cerebral vascular accident, it had, in 1619, to delegate its powers to his/her son Georges Guillaume Ier de Brandebourg.

Genealogy

Jean III Sigismond de Brandebourg belongs to the first branch of the Maison of Hohenzollern. This line gave voters, kings, emperors with the Prussia and the Germany. He is ascending current chief of the imperial House of Germany, the prince Georges Frederic of Prussia.
