Jean Hector de Fay of the Turn-Maubourg

Jean Hector de Fay, Marquis of the Tower Maubourg (or Latour-Maubourg) is a soldier and industrial French. He was not born with the castle from Maubourg, as mention it the majority of the works which are devoted to him. He was born with the castle of the Guard, and baptized in the church of St-Thomas, close to Montbrison (the Loire), on March 14th, 1678. It is in this same church that will be buried the first wife of Jean Hector de Fay, Marie-Anne-Therese of Vieuville, on September 19th, 1714.

Three marriages

He married, on July 14th, 1709 in Paris, Marie-Anne-Therese of Vieuville. She died in the castle of the Guard on September 19th, 1714.

He remaria in January 1716 with Marie-Suzanne Bazin de Bezons, girl of Jacques Bazin de Bezons, Marshal of France, which was, says one, " beautiful and well faite" , and which brought a dowry of 100.000 books to him. Of this marriage, it had two girls:

  • Marie-Marguerite-Eléonore, married with a distance relative, Charles-Louis-César de Fay marquis de Gerlande, who was charged to take again the name of Maubourg;

  • Antoinette-Eléonore, married with Louis-Antoine Duprat de Barbançon.

Marie-Suzanne Bazin de Bezons died on June 20th, 1726 in Paris.

Jean Hector de Fay married, in third weddings, Agnes-Madelaine de Trudaine, in 1731. His/her daughter, Louise-Madeleine, Maria with Charles-François-Christian of Montmorency-Luxembourg prince de Tingry. She did not have a descent.

Military career

L takes part in the Campaigns of the war of succession of Spain. It takes part in the tender of majorque. General inspector of the infantry in 1718 then Lieutenant Général in 1738. It is employed with the army of Flandres ous the orders of the marshal of Noailles, then with the army of the Rhine under the orders of Prince de Conti. It is distinguished with the battles from Ramillies, of Rocourt where it is wounded. It keeps the person of the King to the Bataille of Lauffeld. It orders in 1747 Flandres Hollandaise. Knight of the Orders of the King in 1848, he is Gouverneur of Saint-Malo until 1754. He is high with the dignity of Marshal of France in 1757 and dies in Gueugnon in 1764.

Industrialist

By heritage of his/her mother, Eléonore of Palatine of Dio-Montpeyrous, he is Seigneur of Clessy and part of the town of Gueugnon (the Saone and the Loire). The places being favourable by the presence of forests (combustible) and a river, it founds there into 1721 the Forging mills of Villefay. The work of installation, started into 1719 is prolonged until 1740. The forging mills occupy various trade associations as well inside as outside. The factory includes/understands two Blast furnaces and three Fires of Forging mills and produces approximately 1.000 tons per annum.

To died from the Marshal of the Maubourg Tower, the forging mills pass in the family of the Count De Barbançon. They are resold with an Adviser of Louis XVI then in Pierre Joseph Championnet in 1845. The Forging mills of Gueugnon made the fame of the city, at the national and International level.

Origins of the Family

The Faÿ Family is originating in Vivarais. Lords of Mézenc, the family has important fields during the Middle Ages. The branch of the Turn-Maubourg is resulting from Jean de Fay, damoiseau, lord of Lherm and St-Quentin, who married, on December 10th, 1480, Charlotte of the Turn-Vaudragon. The elder Branch éteind with Philippa de Fay which married the Count de Valentinois, but of many branches juniors remained. Fay of the Maubourg Tower (or Latour-Maubourg) appeared at the 16th century with the marriage into 1527 of Christophe de Faÿ with Margurite Mallet of the Tower, Dame Maubourg, single heiress of Jacques Malet baron of the Maubourg Tower and of Chabrespine. Of this marriage is resulting Jean de Fay of the Tower, lord of the Turn-Maubourg, Their son, Jean de Fay, baron of the Maubourg Tower, Seneshal of the velay and General Maréchal of the Home of the cavalry of France under Charles IX and who married in 1558 Marguerite de Peloux, are distinguished in defense from Velay against the armies Protestant woman.

The elder one of their four sons, Hector de Fay of the Tower married, in 1588, Marguerite of the Rock-Négly.

Jacques of FAY, the elder one, sgr of Maubourg, Maria in 1671, in Paray-le-Monial, with Eleonore Palatine of Dio de Montperroux.

Jean Hector de Fay, (known as the Commander of Latour), Knight of Malta, Commander of Chambéry and Sète directs the troops about Malta of Venice as well as the pontifical armies in Morée (Peloponnese). He is killed in the victorious seat of Mining cottage in 1685 and is buried in the cathedral Saint Jean Baptiste of Malta.

Jean-Philibert de Fay of the Tower Maubourg (1679 - 1759), older brother of the Marshal of the Maubourg Tower, is Général of Galères and Commandeur about Malta. Large Baillif of Lyon, it is named Grand Marshal about Malta little before his death.

Death

All the works concerning the Marshal of Maubourg quote his death in Paris. However, this assertion is false. In the register parochial of Gueugnon, one can read: " The 17th day of May of the year 1764 was buried in the vault on the side of the epistle, at the age of approximately 82 years, having received during the course of the disease the sacraments of penitence and extreme oiling, very high and very powerful lord lord Jean Hector de Fay the Maubourg Tower, knight commander of the orders of the roy, Marshal of France, governor of St-Malo, lord of the grounds of Maubourg, Clessy, Chassy, Essanlés and other places, deceased the day of yesterday, in the presence of undersigned with moy the priests of the vicinity and almost all the parish attended the ceremony, of Sr Pierre Leroux clerk of the connétablie secretary dudict lord, of Sr Etienne François Chappuis lawyer in remaining Parliament with Chracolles judges grounds of known as the sgr, who undersigned themselves with moy, Renardet cleaned sgr of Gueugnon".
