Biography
Resulting from a modest milieu, the Grémillon young person must initially fight with his family to make admit his desire to make musical studies. In 1920, it goes up to Paris to follow the courses of the Schola Cantorum, in particular those of Vincent d' Indy. It binds to the musical and theatrical avant-garde Années 1920 and discovers the cinema as pianist of room while accompanying by silent films. Jean Grémillon accepts then orders of court-measurings related to the work world. He turns its first feature film dice the end of the dumb man, " Maldone" under the benevolent eye of Charles Dullin. But the curtailed version which is marketed meets a poor success. " Guards of phare" , produced by Jacques Feyder in 1929, is a success which leads it to meet Charles Spaak, with which it reads again " Small Lise" , which causes their immediate reference from Pathé-Natan. The exit of film will be deliberately sabotaged. Several times, its films will be mutilated for trade names. In 1937, it makes turn Jean Gabin in " Mouth of amour" and the year according to Raimu in " The Strange Mr Victor" , two films which ensure the artistic and popular dedication to him. The period vychist causes a reorganization of the cinema which enables him to leave two new jewels with Pierre Brasseur in " Lights of é@té" and couples it Madeleine Renaud - Charles Vanel in " The Sky is with vous". After Resistance and the Release, it launches out in several projects of historical films to revolutionary aimings on the Commune of Paris, the Guerre of Spain etc, from which none will be born. It will be released on the way by the producers. After four years spent without turning, it carries out blazing it " Legs blanches" , which diverts criticism and the public and brings back it to a lack of means. It makes then only court-measurings, except the very feminist " Love of a femme" , alas boycotted by the distributers. After some documentary like its film éponyme on surrealist the " Andre Masson, Jean Grémillon dies out on November 25th, 1959 prematurely. Seven or eights of the feature films of Grémillon were regarded a long time as lost, all its feature films finally could be found, saved and restored starting from the middle of the years 1970.
