Jean Gac

Jean Gac , born in 1936 with Ales, is Artist-painter.

Professor of drawing, it is hardly tried by a career in conformity with the tendencies which dominate the Sixties, and its first activities (walks, postal sending) continue in margin of the allowed categories, as those of Christian Boltanski which it knows since 1966. Impassioned literature, it comes from there to propose, initially in modest books juxtaposing also allusive photographs and texts, the account of the actions of an anonymous painter: this narrative material authorizes it to be defined as artist-painter, projecting his problems, its doubts and its moods on its double. Presented per H. Szeeman to Documented V within the framework of the individual Mythologies , Gac is then integrated in a '' Narrative Art '' into the sides of Boltanski, Messagier or Jochen Gerz. Its work gradually joined the traditional presentation of painting: photographs and texts (themselves photographed) are organized in framed panels, without giving up the book aspect ( the Painter of Tamaris , 1989, Introduction to works of an artist into my kind, 1987). Since 1981, it reproduces with the traditional techniques (charcoal, pastels) of the illustrations borrowed from the popular literature, which make it possible its character to live new adventures, all also stereotyped, and supplements its images by objects (typewriter, camera, projector of cinema) evocative of a setting in scene or a fiction which does not finish any putting in abyss its processes: the work of Gac is worked out on the absence of work of its hero.
