Jean Dratz , (1903 - 1967), painter and Belgian illustrator

Biography

Jean DRATZ, born with Mount-Saint-Guibert, (Belgium) in 1903 and deceased with Uccle, (idem) in 1967. Painter, draftsman, illustrator and engraver, he is the son and Constant Dratz raises. It makes its studies of right and economic scenes to the Universit3e libre de Bruxelles. It has a predilection for the landscapes with the sober lines which evoke the precision of a photograph or the graphic style Japanese, not without a certain melancholy. The plates of the Ardennes, the undulating area of the the Brabant, as well as Flemish lowland and the area of the coast inspired its considerable work. The precision in detail, the clear drawing, the direction of the color, the poetic atmosphere and the depth of the landscapes make think of Bruegel or De Saedeleer. It also treated impressions of voyage in France and Italy. Caricaturist and considered illustrator, he is the cofounder of “Smiling Mine” association of Belgian cartoonists, he was also the director of the Cartoon Bravo (weekly). Sometimes he was called the “Belgian Dubout”. He decorated the houses with the Brésil and of the Chile for the World Fair of 1935, the house of the Congo in 1958 and he also created stage sets. It is mentioned in the majority of the guides and dictionaries of artists.
