Jean Dasté

Jean Dasté is a Acteur, Director and French theater director (Paris, August 18th 1904 - Saint-Etienne, October 15th 1994 ).

Jean Dasté was an original hyphen between Jean Vigo, that the New wave adored, Alain Resnais and François Truffaut.

Jean Dasté is initiated with the theater by his mother, then by Jacques Copeau, his father-in-law, who takes it as raises at the school of the Old man-Dovecote in 1922. He follows his Master in Burgundy, where the “group of Copiaux” plays of 1924 with 1929. Of this adventure, it keeps the taste of the troop, which will lead it to the “Company of the Fifteen”, directed by Michel Saint-Denis (1931), with the “Company of Four-season” (1937), to the Workshop of André Barsacq (1940 - 1944).

It is Jean Renoir which makes it begin with the cinema in 1932 in Boudu saved from water . But Jean Vigo gives him his noble letters by making it play in Zero for conduct (1933) the role of a supervisor, and especially in Atalante (1934). At the sides of Michel Simon and Dita Parlo, it there is a little in withdrawal, but camps a moving marine.

After the death of Vigo (1934), it returns to Renoir in the Crime of Mr Lange (1936), the life is with us (1936) and the Great Illusion (1937).

Jean Dasté founds during the Second world war his “Theater of the Season-News”. In 1945, it is destined for Grenoble to create the “Company of the actors of Grenoble”, which marks the official beginnings of theatrical decentralization. In 1947, with Saint-Etienne, it founds and directs the dramatic center of the City of the minors (currently Comédie of Saint-Etienne ). Actors and technicians brought together around him furrow the country roads of the area inhabitant of Saint-Etienne during nearly ten years. The troop manages to attract a popular public, which it initiates with the repertory of the French and foreign great classics: Molière, Shakespeare, Tchekhov.

In 1956, the success met by the creation of the Cercle of Caucasian chalk of Brecht centres its activity in Saint-Etienne. Jean Dasté rides contemporary authors like Yves Jamiaque, Jacques Audiberti, Jean-Paul Sartre or Michel Vinaver, while devoting himself to experiments on MIME, the No Japanese and the Greek tragedy.

In 1963, after more than 20 years of absence of the cinema, Resnais makes it return in Muriel, or the Time of a return in a modest role but impressing of the man to the goat, then in 1966 in the war is finished . François Truffaut, surely partly in homage to Vigo, gives him a big role, at its sides, in the wild Child (1969) and later in the Man who loved the women (1977). But it is in the green Room (1978) that he interprets a splendid and worrying character, Bernard Humbert, and there still Truffaut gives him the counterpart personally. It returns to Resnais for My uncle d' Amérique in 1980 and the Love to dead in 1984.

One can also notice his appearances in 1969 in Z of Costa-Gavras, in 1976 in the Body of my enemy of Henri Verneuil, in 1978 in the Molière of ARIANE Mnouchkine, in 1980 in One week of holidays of Bertrand Tavernier, in 1989 in white Noce of Jean-Claude Brisseau.

Lastly, homage to the second degree, Suzanne Schiffman, assistant and scenario writer of Truffaut makes it play in its film the Monk and the witch (1987), one of its last roles.

Jean Dasté dies in Saint-Etienne in 1994. A theater bears its name there.
