Jean Danjou

Jean Danjou (born the April 15th 1829 with Chalabre (France), killed the April 30th 1863 with Camerone with the Mexico) is a French military officer of the Second Empire.

Biography

Fourth of a phratry of eight children, it is originating in a military family of tradition. In 1849, it enters to the school of Saint-Cyr military school.

Promoted second lieutenant, it is affected with the 51 {{E}} of Line. In 1852, it is versed with the 2 {{E}} Foreign Régiment. Named lieutenant the December 24th 1853. May 1st 1853, during a exercise of topography in Algeria, it loses its left hand, which it will replace by a hand articulated out of wood.

It misses being laid off, but succeeds in being made re-enlist with the 26 {{E}} of Infantry. It is named captain in 1855, then is again affected with the 2nd foreign Regiment in 1857. It takes part in the campaigns of Algérie, of Kabylie, the Crimea (Sébastopol), of Italy (Battles of Magenta and Solferino), of the Morocco and the Mexico.

At the time of the Forwarding of Mexico (1861-1867), it is killed the April 30th 1863 with Camerone, during a battle remained mythical, during which 65 legionaries (of which he was the commander) dealt with 2000 soldiers of the Mexican army.

After its death

Its hand out of wooden articulated was found by the lieutenant Karl Grübert of the Austrian Army the July 17th 1865, during the arrest of the Ramirez general who held it (according to another source, it was found in a farmer, to 100 km of the place of the combat. This one held it of a guérillo having taken part in the combat). It is brought back to Sidi-beautiful-Abbots in 1865 by colonel Guilhem. Since, this relic is preserved in the crypt of the Museum of the Memory of the Foreign legion at Aubagne.
