Jean Crespon

Jean Crespon is a Naturaliste French, born the October 14th 1797 with Nimes and dead the 1857 in this same city.

Resulting from a poor family, he exerts many trades as barber, soldier or poet. He learns the Taxidermie, the sale of naturalized animals enables him to be devoted to the Natural history.

He makes appear in 1840 a great volume of 564 pages entitled Ornithologie of Gard and neighbouring countries where he describes 321 species of Oiseau X. This book is worth to him the praises on behalf of many naturalists of its time. Thus, Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1805-1861) recognizes much value to him because it is made on the nature and not on the books like so much of others .

In 1844, it makes appear a work even more ambitious heading southernmost Fauna in two volumes. Crespon described 27 new S. the twenty last years of the life of Crespon are difficult there: patient, it finishes by more being able to deal with his collections of which number of specimens disappear. They are bequeathed to the Muséum of Nimes created in 1895.
