Jean Coatanlem

Jean Coatanlem (or Jehan Coetanlem), sior of Kéraudy in Plouezoc' H, was born close from Morlaix towards 1455, in France. It was called the king of the sea .

Rich person Ship-owner and captain of his ships, it delivered himself to the Course at the expense of the boats crossing close to the Brittany. In 1484, the ship-owners of Bristol, to counter it, sent three warships that Coatanlem succeeds in overcoming in spite of its inferiority. In reprisals, it assembled a forwarding to plunder Bristol and take as hostages its notable. The business displeased deeply to the duke François II of Brittany which wanted peace with the England and considered the business as Pirate laughs.

To avoid having to compensate his victims, Jean Coatanlem went to put at the service of the king Portugal, Jean II, and became tall Admiral country. He dies in Lisbon in 1492.

Its nephew, Nicolas Coatanlem (1460 - 1519) extended his trade since Morlaix, Penmarc' H and Paimpol. To help the duke François II of Brittany besieged by the French troops in 1487, it takes part with Michel Marion in the supply of Nantes. In 1500, it makes build for Anne of Brittany, queen of France, the man-of-war Cordelière sent to try to deliver Turks Mytilène in the Greek island of Lesbos.
