Jean Chesneaux

Jean Chesneaux (1922- July 23rd, 2007) was a Historien and political and associative militant.

Biography

Specialist in Eastern Asia (in particular of the Vietnam and the China), he was professor at the University Paris VII and the École of the high studies in social sciences. Several publications testify to its activity of academic, quote in particular his study on Sun Yat-SEN, regarded as the " father of China moderne" , written in 1959 and republished in 1982.

From his engagements, Jean Chesneaux was a witness of his century. He was member of the PCF until 1969. Chesneaux showed a field crop, and its centers of interest were varied.

Impassioned science fiction, it publishes in 1971 one entitled book Jules Verne, a political reading , which it will remelt under a new title thirty years later. He will also write several articles on George Orwell in 1984. The title which it chooses for the English edition of its book Modernity-World was Brave Modern World , allusion transparent to the famous work of Aldous Huxley best of the world (in English Brave New World ).

In the years 1970, it is interested particularly in the fights against the project of extension of the military camp of the Larzac, as a collection testifies some to cartoons of which it was initiating, Ahead worms of new adventures .

In the years 1980, it publishes two works on the " modernité" ( Of modernity in 1983 then Modernity-World in 1989), which leads it to be interested in the evolutions of the technique. He also collaborates in the review Terminal 19/84 , which studies the computerization of the company.

Bound friendship with François Therefore, it was one of the first to diffuse and popularize its theses. It publishes many articles on the problems North-South and involved in the questions of Développement. Particularly, the role of France in the area of the Pacific Ocean retains its interest; it publishes two books on the subject ( Transpacifiques in 1987 and France in the Pacific in 1992).

He was president of Greenpeace France of 1997 to 2004. More recently, he was also member of the scientific advice of Attac and member of the committee of sponsorship of the French Coordination for the Decade of the culture of non-violence and peace.
