Jean Caracciolo (Marshal of France)

Jean Caraccioli (14801550), prince of Melfi, duke of Venosa, Alcoli and Soria, large Seneshal of the Kingdom of Naples, Marshal of France, is noble Neapolitan with the service of France.

It stuck to the French during the occupation of Naples by Charles VIII. It adopted the France initially and took share with the Bataille of Ravenne in 1512. It joined then the party of the Emperor.

Fact captive in its town of Melfi in 1528 by the marshal of Lautrec, and the Emperor having refused to pay his ransom, it was turned over towards the king of France. François I {{er}} returned freedom to him, did it knight of the Ordre of Saint-Michel, Lieutenant general of the armies, and gave him Romorantin, Nogent, the Châteauneuf-on-Loire, and the Iles of Martigues, in compensation of the loss of its goods of Italy.

It was used consequently with dignity in the war of Provence from August 18th to September 14th, 1536 against the Emperor in 1536. It helped into 1543 the towns of Luxembourg and Landrecies. Marshal of France in 1544, it was named governor of the Piedmont in 1545. He died in Not-with-Suze in August 1550.
