Jean Bonnefoy (Paris, the March 12th 1950) is French author, translator and Musicien. With nearly 150 works to its credit (all confused kinds: test with the biography while passing by the novel), one finds especially his name behind many translations of famous works of the literature of anglophone SF (Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, John Varley, William Gibson, Walter Jon Williams, Neal Stephenson…), he is also writer (a novel, several tests and news of SF), journalist and musician.

Biography

He makes his studies with the National college of business of Paris then joined the Institute of town planning of the Faculty of Vincennes (Université of Paris VIII) where he obtains a license, then a control of town planning on " Concept of city in the literature of science fiction " , which well quickly brings it to côtoyer this medium where it ties faithful friendships and solids enmities…

One notes some sporadic arts person participations between 1964 and 1972 in various reviews ( Vie and Langage, Education, Écrivains, Galaxie, Argon, Science-fiction Magazine, Icy Fluide, Miniature Rail Flash ). Since 1972, he writes news of SF, in collaboration with Philippe Berneuil or Gerard Briais. A score are published, in particular in the anthologies of " new science fiction française" : heavy Sky cold concrete and Four billion soldiers , like in the reviews Horizons of fantastic the or Fluid icy .

In 1978, it publishes " The morning of the explosion" in the anthology of Bernard Blanc Why I killed Jules Verne who is worth to him to be noticed by the small world of the French-speaking Science fiction.

Its literary career

During its studies, it on the occasion to publish various translations of articles and of tests, then, by taste for the literature, it launches out in the translation of new arts persons for the press.

It is Elisabeth Gille (then direct arts person in the Denoël editor), which puts the foot with the clamp to him and directs it towards the romantic translation, in particular within the famous collection " Presences of the futur". One owes him inter alia the translation of several cycles: 5 volumes of the " Guide of the galactic traveller " of Douglas Adams, the trilogy of " Gaïa" of John Varley, the trilogy of George Alec Effinger (" Gravity with the manque" and its continuations), and of course continuations of the Cycle of " Foundation " of Isaac Asimov.

The first novel which it translates in 1978 (" Michaelmas" of Algis Budrys) already the movement Cyberpunk precedes which it undoubtedly contributed, by its many translations, to make known in France: of William Gibson ( Neuromancien and three other books of the cycle), with Neal Stephenson ( Cryptonomicon ), while passing by Bruce Sterling, Walter Jon Williams, Stalemate Cadigan, Gwyneth Jones, Womack Jack, George Alec Effinger…

It also represents (or Co-translates) many tests and biographies: Perestroika of Mikhaïl Gorbatchev, for example, or Against all the enemies of Richard Clarke, former adviser with the safety of the White House. After a new bracket presses in reviews " branchées" ( interactive Universe ) and especially to Playboy , it moves away from the SF to represent from now on especially political tests as well as politico-technological thrillers, in particular of many novels of Tom Clancy (of which the famous " Debt of honneur" , which preceded the September 11th) and all the series carrying the Clancy claw but written by other authors: " COp-Center" , " Net Force" , " Net Forces Young Adults" , " Power Plays" , " Splinter Cell" … Among its personal works, let us quote: Especially not of panic. The guide of the guide (biographical presentation of Douglas Adams and its saga) and " The fortress of métal" , Co-writing with Gerard Briais and for which it creates an Internet site, whose certain pages are intended to be used as no-claims bonus for the novel (see external Liens).

Other artistic activities

To put at the credit of Jean Bonnefoy, his artistic aptitudes concerning, this time, the music (composer-songwriter and musician: piano, synthé, mix, harmonica, flute, song…) that it expresses within various projects of heteroclite influences (" Los Gonococcos" , " Dicotylédon" , " Neutrino"), only or with Jean-Louis Breton the and Yves Frémion. Three discs 45 turns and of the recordings in many concerts testify to this time (1976-1983). Some of its titles were recently taken again and remixés (in particular by Thierry Svahn). It also signed (often under the pseudonym of " JAB" or of " Kudbas") a certain number of illustrations, covers of books, models of newspapers…
