Jean Vanier (1928 with the Canada -) is a Canadian personality which was devoted to the mentally handicapped persons: he created the Communauté of the Arch in 1964, then the pilgrimages, and joined association Foi and light .

Biography

Wire of Georges Basket maker, General governor of Canada, Jean Vanier become naval officer, in the Royal Navy, then in the Canadian royal Marine.

Resigner in 1950, it passes a Doctorat of Philosophie to the Catholic Institut of Paris.

The meeting: the Arch

The first meeting of Jean Vanier with mental handicapped people takes place in 1963. Highly challenged, it decides into 1964 to live with Philippe Seux and Raphaël Simi with Trosly-Breuil. They are the beginnings of the Arch, name which it gave to its first house.

Thus he is the founder of the Communauté of the Arch which accommodates people having a mental handicap. Although enjoying the contribution of chaplains, it does not have the canonical recognition of the Church and, for this reason, is not subjected to the hierarchy of the Catholic church.

Faith and light

He joined in Marie-Helene Mathieu, catholic founder of association Foi and light , which organized the international pilgrimages Foi and light ; first place with Lourdes in 1971 had.

Jean Vanier is in addition the author of several books of spirituality, cf " Together towards a ground of unit: a vision of the œcuménisme" , 1999.
