Jean-Yves Le Drian

Jean-Yves Le Drian is a French politician, born the June 30th 1947 with Lorient (Morbihan).

He is member of the Socialist party.

Biography

He was with the head of UNEF of Rennes in 1968. He begins his political career at the time of the municipal elections of 1977 while being made elect on the list of the socialist mayor of Lorient, Jean Lagarde, of which he becomes assistant. He is elected mayor of the city in 1981, following the resignation of this last. He will occupy this function during 17 years until in 1998, date of his resignation due to office plurality of mandates after his election with the District council of Brittany. There is then replaced by Norbert Métairie, his former assistant, but remains member of the Municipal council. He is even re-elected on the list of Norbert Métairie at the time of the municipal elections of 2001. He resigns however of this municipal mandate the shortly after the regional elections of 2004 to devote itself fully to his new mandate of president de Région.

The April 3rd 1978, it makes its entry at the 30 years age to the National Assembly while being elected appointed Fifth district of Morbihan. It ensures the succession of the outgoing deputy thus Yves Allainmat, the former socialist mayor of Lorient, which was not represented. Although elected in a department of preserving tendency, he will manage to preserve his seat during 13 years, to his entry with the government of Edith Cresson the May 18th 1991 as Secretary of State to the sea, near the Minister for the equipment, housing, transport and space Paul Quilès. Its ministerial career will be however of short duration pusiqu' it will not find its station after the nomination with the Matignon Hotel of Pierre Bérégovoy the April 2nd 1992. Its successor will be another Breton elected official, the costarmoricain Charles Josselin.

At the time of the legislative elections of 1993, it yields to “blue vagueness” and does not manage to recover its mandate of deputy, yielded to his substitute Pierre Victoria during two years. He is beaten the March 28th 1993 by the candidate UDF Michel Godard.

He recovers finally his seat of deputy at the time of the legislative elections of 1997. He then beats clearly the candidate RPR Catherine Giquel by obtaining 56,79% of the voices to the second turn. He is re-elected appointed the June 16th 2002 for a sixth mandate by beating accuracy the candidate UDF Fabrice Loher with 50,39% of the voices to the second turn. During XIIe legislature (2002 - 2007), it belongs to the socialist group and is Member of the Commission of defense. It decides not to be represented for the legislative of 2007 and supports the candidature of its mission leader for the Région, Francoise Olivier-Coupeau.

In 1998, it is elected with the District council of Brittany on the socialist list of Morbihan but it will have to be satisfied to carry out the opposition to the new president Josselin de Rohan (RPR). Following its return to the National Assembly in 2002, he resigns of his regional mandate. There will remain only two years well off this one. Indeed, the March 28th 2004 it leads to the victory the list “Brittany on the left, Brittany for all” (PS - PCF - PRG - the Greens - UDB), which obtains 58,66% of the votes cast and 58 seats. This clear victory concretizes the progressive swing on the left Brittany. He becomes thus the first socialist president of the District council of Brittany. national delegate in charge of defense near the first secretary of the PS.

At the time of the primary education PS for the presidential of 2007, it supports the candidature of Ségolène Royal.

After the legislative of June 2007, he affirms to have received a phone call of the President of the Republic Nicolas Sarkozy proposing to him to enter the government Fillon 2, which he refuses.
