Jean-Pierre Vernant , born the January 4th 1914 with Layered branches and deceased with Sevres the January 9th 2007, is a French historian and anthropologist, specialist in the ancient Greece and more especially in the Greek myths. He was professor emeritus with the Collège de France and one of the heroes of Resistance.

Biography

Born in Provins (Seine-et-Marne), it forever known his/her father. His/her mother dies whereas it is only 8 years old.

He undertakes studies of philosophy and is received first with the aggregation, in this discipline, in 1937. Member with the Communist youths, it enters the Résistance during the Second world war: he joined the network Release-South, founded by Emmanuel d' Astier of Vigerie. Thereafter, it orders the French Forces of the interior of Haute-Garonne under the pseudonym of “colonel Berthier”. It is Compagnon of the Release. After the war, it remains within the French Communist party and leaves it in 1969. He is member of the committee of sponsorship of the French Coordination for the Decade of the culture of peace and non-violence. He supports, since his creation in 2001, the funds associative Non-Violence XXI. He gives up his university career to take again the press company which his/her father had founded with layered branches at the end of XIX°siècle

Influenced by Louis Gernet, it turns to the anthropology of ancient Greece when it enters to CNRS, in 1948. Ten years later, he becomes director of studies to EHESS. Specialist in the ancient Greece, it often expressed himself on what there is of commun run but also of different between the Greeks and the modern Occident, in particular with regard to the practice of the Démocratie. He was professor emeritus at the Collège de France.

October 23rd, 2006 Jean-Pierre Vernant wished to give his last conference to the Le Corbusier College of the popular city of Aubervilliers.

Jean-Pierre Vernant died on January 9th, 2007 in his residence of Sevres (Hauts-de-Seine). The college of Sevres is named Jean-Pierre Vernant on November 21st, 2007.
