Jean-Pierre Rampal

Jean-Pierre Rampal (born the January 7th 1922 with Marseilles and deceased the May 20th 2000 with Paris) is a Flûtiste French.

Biography

Until its thirteenth year, he wanted to become painter. And his/her father, professor of flute to the Conservatory of Marseilles, brought best than it could his support for this desire of child and got to him all necessary conceivable painting. Even after having given to his son, who claimed it with obstinacy, a lesson of test and to be themselves convinced of his innate talent, he refused to give him a training of professional musician. After his baccalaureat, Jean-Pierre Rampal junior thus did what his/her father wished: he studied the Médecine. In 1943, whereas it was student of third year, the French Army however obliged it to leave its birthplace, Marseilles, to go to Paris in order to put itself at the service of the fatherland in a medical laboratory. Little time after its arrival, the examinations of entry to the Conservatoire of Paris was to precisely take place. When he learned that the candidates obtained army two full weeks of leave to prepare, he was registered and was accepted with the examination without the least difficulty. Later, it left the most famous place of musical formation of France with the first price of flute.

With the release of Paris, it on the occasion to play radio operator Concerto for flute of Jacques Ibert and was engaged on the field with the Orchestra of the Opéra of Vichy. In 1946, at the 24 years age, it signed its first contract for a round Soliste. When these obligations, which extended little by little to the whole world, had become an obstacle with its activities of 2nd flute to the Opéra of Paris (1955 - 1960), it gave up this station and preserved nothing any more but that of professor at the Conservatoire of Paris. Constantly reinvity in all the festivals, he was (with good more than 200 recordings on disc) the artist of classical music which one could most frequently hear in the radio programs in France, and a man who lived with and for the music. Rampal founded respectively in 1945 and 1953 the French Wind quintet and the Ensemble baroque of Paris, of the formations of chamber music which work with delicate sound effects; it dealt with the edition of old compositions for flute which were covered with dust in the files, and created for itself an immense repertory in which any important work since 1700 until Boulez does not miss.

It is difficult to say exactly what, at the time of a concert of Rampal, fascine so much the listeners, electrifies them and hypnotizes them. The ones celebrate the almost inhuman technical perfection - a specialist calculated that, in the fast passages, it controlled approximately hundred muscular movements a second. Others are filled with enthusiasm apparently easy paths cut through through the ranges decorated with trilles and of appoggiatura S. Of others still rent its art of coloring, the plenitude of the serious sounds and the clear and hot ends of the registers, softness with which are manufactured the limiting sounds, the incredible respiratory reserve and the spontaneousness of the impromptu changes. On a point only, the experts fall all from agreement: Rampal is one of largest in its field. In addition to special folk instruments of China, of Bali, Laos and Balkans, and a dozen modern flutes of concert, it has two gold flutes. One comes from a firm of William Hayes Boston, the other of Paris - the latter was offered in 1869 to the virtuoso Jean Remusat by the Philharmonic Company of Shanghai.

Jean-Pierre Rampal dies the May 20th 2000 of an heart attack in his residence with Paris. He is buried with the Cimetière of Montparnasse (the 3rd division).

The contest of flute Jean-Pierre Rampal is organized in Paris in order to precede the best world flutists of less than 30 years. The seventh edition took place in 2005 and the next one is announced for 2008.
