Biography
Beginnings in mechanical sports
Jean-Pierre Jarier begins in mechanical sports by the motor bike but turns quickly to the car when he persuades his mother to buy Renault R8 Gordini. He makes his beginnings in competition in 1967 by disputing the Gordini cut and takes down some places of honor (6th in Nogaro, 7th in Albi). The following year, it persists out of Gordini cut and takes down its first three victories while making its beginnings in the single-seater (Formula France) thanks to Jean-Pierre Beltoise. If the results in the single-seater are less convincing than in R8, Beltoise takes down nevertheless to him a wheel in Formule 3 for 1969. It is in 1970 that Jarier reveals its talent in F3 by finishing 3rd championship of France, which enables him to assemble in Formule 2 in 1971 within the stable March.
Formula 2 and one experiment in F1 without a future
This first season of F2 is of good omen since it finishes twice on the podium (in Albi and Vallelunga). March, also present Formulates 1, makes it possible of them to him to dispute its first GP of Formula 1 at the time of the Italian test within Shell Arnold TEAM (Ronnie Peterson, him also March pilot is as for him regularly committed in the two championships). At the wheel of March 701, Jarier is qualified in 24e and last position and finishes the test not-classified, with 8 turns of the winner Peter Gethin while Peterson, on the 711, is qualified in 6th position and finishes 2nd race. The comparison does not play in the favor of the constrained French with " redoubler" in F2 for the season 1972 and replaced by Jose Dolhem within Shell Arnold TEAM.
In F2 and F1: contrasted seasons
Jean-Pierre Jarier improves in Formula 2 and begins the season by a victory in Luxembourg, but it is in 1973 that its talent will be really expressed since it will sign 8 successes and will become champion of Europe of the discipline. But as of the end of 1972 the official team March judges her pilot " mûr" for the discipline queen and reserves to him the same treatment as for Peterson in 1971: an engagement in the two championships (in F2 in company of Jean-Pierre Beltoise and F1 to replace Chris Amon). Unfortunately, the history is not repeated. The first season of F1 de Jarier does not have absolutely anything to see with that of Peterson. Jarier qualifies himself with 10 recoveries, but often in bottom of grid (except a beautiful 7th place with the GP of France) and manages to be classified only with the GP of the United States. With its discharge, the 721G and 731 are often at the origin of its abandonments. This first complete season Formulates 1 of them contrast strongly with its successes in F2 and Jarier decides to leave March at the end of the campaign 1973.
Formula 1 at Shadow
In 1974, Jarier disputes the championship of the world of sport scars within the stable Matra Simca at the wheel of 670 qu ' it divides with his/her friend Beltoise and the results are with go since it takes down 5 victories. In 1974, it has also signed at Shadow, the stable of Gift Nicholls, committed in F1 for only one season. Jarier replaces Oliver turned over to run out of Edge-Am and becomes the fellow-member of Peter Revson. The championship begins at the wheel from the DN1 from the former season that Jarier does not manage to bring to the flag to checkerworks at the time of the first two tests. Environment at Shadow becomes heavy following the death of Revson under private tests, however Jarier, at the wheel of the new DN3, registers its first points in F1 in good manners while finishing 3rd in Monaco, then 5th in Sweden. The end of the season is duller but Jarier acquires experiment: this season it disputed 14 GP, rejoined 7 times the arrival, taken down 6 points, some beautiful qualifications in 6th, 7th and 8th place on the grid. It thus decides to pile up again at Shadow in 1975.The following season, at the wheel of the new DN5 (committed as of the first test for him and its fellow-member Tom Pryce) is promising since Jarier takes down its first pole position at the time of the inaugural GP in Argentina. However it cannot take the departure because of a problem of transmission. It only did not leave given because, fifteen days later, in Brazil, it takes down new a pole (and the race carries out before being constrained with the abandonment). It is necessary for him to have patience until the fourth GP, in Spain, to register its first points of the season while finishing 4th. Unfortunately, they will be only year, the DN5 lacking reliability. A new single-seater, the DN7 is committed starting from the GP of Austria. This one is motorized by V12 Matra instead of V8 Cosworth. Jarier, who knows the French block well to have tried out it in championship of the world of sport scars the former season, expects to see his results progressing. Disappointment is only larger when the results in qualifications fall while the DN7 give up in race. At the end of two tests, Jarier finds the old DN5 and is not made any more illusions on the results to come. Principal satisfactions of the season, Jarier will find them in qualifications where it is pointed out more and more: two pole positions, 2 third places and two fourth places.
In 1976 Jarier remains faithful to Don Nicolls which can offer to him only one evolution of the DN7 of the former season following the failure of collaboration with Matra. Jarier makes illusion at the beginning of season by qualifying 3rd inaugural GP in Brazil and 7th with Beach Length but as the Grands Prix are connected, it encounters more and more difficulties of benefitting from its exceeded single-seater. Its best result of the year is one 7th place, which encourages it to leave Shadow, in lose speed, more especially as the principal sponsor of the stable, Universal Oil Products leaves the team at the end of the season.
ATS: missed bet
In 1977 Jean-Pierre signs at ATS, the stable beginner of Gunther Schmidt, owner of the company Auto Technisches Spezialzubehör, specialist in the light alloy rims. Schmidt benefits from the withdrawal of the Penske stable to register late Penske PC4 with the championship. Against any waiting, (a stable beginner which engages of the single-seaters of the former season which had hardly shone), Jarier is qualified in 9th place of the first race that it disputes with the stable and finishes even in the 6th place, registering the first points of ATS in F1. But logic takes again its place and the remainder of the season is disappointing. Jarier qualifies himself with 11 recoveries, in medium or bottom of grid until Schmidt chooses not to dispute the last races to concentrate over 1978. Jarier then carries out a measuring rod for Shadow with Watkins Glen (9th at the wheel of the DN8) then for Ligier at the time of the GP of Japan where it is betrayed by V12 Matra of the JS7. To be comforted, as usual, it can hope on its exploits in Sport since it gains two victories (Dijon and Paul-Ricard).In 1978, Jarier and Jochen Mass are seen entrusting the first " vraie" ATS, the HS1. Quickly one realizes that the single-seater suffers from preoccupations with a handling and Jarier has much evil to be qualified (it essuie 3 not qualifications). It is all the more frustrated that when it takes the departure, its single-seater leads it to the flag to checkerworks to honourable places (12th in Argentina, 8th in South Africa and 11th to Beach Length). Jarier morfond at ATS when Lotus requests it to control the 79 following the death of Ronnie Peterson. The French qualifies himself in 8th place with Watkins Glen and occupies the third places when a gasoline breakdown deprives it of the podium. With the Grand Prix following to Canada it the third pole position of its career, proving with all that its talent is always intact, it takes down misses only the good car. It is however constrained with the abandonment on oil escape whereas it occupies the head of the race. Jarier thinks of having made any possible sound to convince Colin Chapman, become world champion of the manufacturers, to preserve it for the following season but Carlos Reutemann and Mario Andretti roasts the courtesy to him. It nevertheless typed in the eye of another British owner, l'" Uncle Ken" Tyrrell which offers a wheel for 1979 to him.
Two years at Tyrrell
1979 begins in brass band for Jarier at the wheel from the 009. It is qualified in second line for the inaugural GP in Argentina before taking down a podium in South Africa (3rd after a qualification in 9th position). It finishes the two following GP in the points (6th with Beach Length and 5th in Spain) before being emphasized at the time of its national GP in Dijon-Prenois where it is classified 5th and taken part in the " success française" with Jabouille (victorious) and Rene Arnoux, 3rd at the conclusion of its epic duel against Gilles Villeneuve. At the time of the following GP, in Great Britain, Jarier takes down once again the podium behind Clay Regazzoni and Arnoux. It finishes its profitable harvest of points in Italy while being classified 6th. 1979 are the best season of F1 de Jarier since it registers 14 points and finishes in the 10th place of the classification of the pilot. But its great satisfaction is to have marked half of the 28 points of Tyrrell which is classified 5th championship manufacturer. All the hopes are allowed for 1980.Tyrrell starts the season 1980 with the 009 and Jarier is qualified only in bottom of grid. The arrival of the 010 starting from the GP of Kyalami does not change large thing with the situation. The other stables progressed much more than Tyrrell and Jarier can better only make 5th in race (Belgium, Great Britain and Netherlands). With the end of the year, Jarier remains 10th championship of the world but registered only 6 points (what represents all the same half of the points of the stable, the assessment is altogether similar to that of the previous year), Ken Tyrrell does not renew the contract of its pilots and Jean-Pierre finds himself without wheel.
Return in bottom of grid
Beginning 1981, it is called with the assistance by Ligier to replace with the foot raised Jean-Pierre Jabouille insufficiently given of its accident to the GP of Canada 1980. If it is constrained with the abandonment with Beach Length, it leads its JS17 to the door of the points at the time of the Brazilian test. After these two measuring rods, Ligier chooses, quite to align only one single-seater tracks some (Jabouille is still not available), to do without its services. Starting from the GP of France, when, following the dismissal of Gerard Ducarouge, Jabouille hangs up again the gloves to become supervisor of the technical activities of Ligier, the stable will prefer to engage Patrick Tambay rather than Jarier… It finds then refuge at Osella, a modest stable Italian which disputes its second season only with the more high level. Osella had had problems in 1980 because its single-seater was too much heavy compared to its competitors. The new FA-1B, modest evolution of its devancière, still suffer from some problems of a ponderal nature (solved with the FA-1C), but the stable also suffers from problems of a pecuniary nature. Enzo Osella seeks paying pilots to supplement his budget (Giorgio Francia, Beppe Gabbiani, Piercarlo Ghinzani and Miguel Angel Guerra), only Jarier is not requested financially. This one is simply satisfied to align the best results of the stable: he manages to qualify himself with 7 recoveries and takes down two 8th places, one 9th and one 10th.During the intersaison, Jarier is approached by Frank Williams and carries out a conclusive test in the Paul Ricard for if required replacing Carlos Reutemann in 1982. Reutemann announces finally that it will dispute the championship 1982 and Jarier prolongs then its contract with Enzo Osella at the time when Reutemann gives up… In 1982, Osella has gums Pirelli but the FA-1C of the end of season 81 do not leave there not transcended. It succeeds in nevertheless being qualified (in bottom of grid), test often too difficult for its young team-member, the beginner Riccardo Paletti. Jarier carries out a true exploit with Marine Saint where it finishes 4th, thus offering his first points to the stable which will finish 13th with the championship of the manufacturers. In Canada, Paletti, qualified in bottom of grid, cannot avoid Ferrari of Didier Pironi which fixed at the beginning. He dies on the blow, Osella blazing up following the shock. Jarier gives up taking the second departure and the team is traumatisée. The stable does not know any more how to manage second half of the season, Ghinzani is pointed out to take over temporarily the duties then finally Osella decides to make run only Jarier which, discouraged by the abandonments with repetition, receives like a delivery the proposal Ligier for 1983.
End of a career in F1
Jarier finds in 1983 Ligier, the stable which had not wanted to preserve it earlier two years. The team is not any more on her level of the years 1979,1980 and 1981 when it pointed with the 4th rank of the championship manufacturers (the clearing will take place in 1985 and 1986, without Jarier…). At the wheel of the JS21 Jarier and its fellow-member Raul Boesel qualify themselves only in bottom of grid, the only qualification in the ten first is to be put at the credit of the French pilot in Monaco where it takes down the 9th position. Jarier essuie 8 abandonments in the season and never manages to be classified in the 6 first, his best performance being one 7th place in Austria. This sixth virgin season encourages it to give up Formula 1 at the end of the season.
After F1
Jean-Pierre Jarier does not give up the automobile competition for as much. Starting from 1984, it is aligned in various championships (Production, Superproduction, Coupe Porsche…). In 1993, it gains the 24 hours of Spa-Francorchamps with Christian Fittipaldi and Uwe Alzen over Porsche 911 RSR. Of 1997 with 2002, it disputes the championship TRUSTED WP where it takes down in particular the pole position at the time of its first race. In 1998 and 1999, it gains the championship of France WP.Jean-Pierre Jarier directs today an event-driven agency to Monaco, Monaco International mediums which organizes various training courses of piloting, tourist excursions on the Riviera (4x4, helicopter, etc) and rents sites in terrace during the Grand Prix of Monaco.
