Jean-Pierre Louis Laurent Houël , born the June 28th 1735 with Rouen and died with Paris the November 14th 1813, is a engraver, Dessinateur and painter French.
Born in a family from prosperous craftsmen, Houël made known early its taste for the art of the drawing, of which it began the study at the fifteen years age to the school of the Art schools of Rouen, under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Descamps. It acquired there a familiarity with works of the Dutch painters and Flemish who was determining on the choice that it made specialize in the painting of landscapes.
Placé then in a skilful architect, it studied the prospect there; then, always thorough towards its art of predilection, it went to Paris, where it entered the workshop of Bottom, the founder of the beautiful etching. Become one of the best pupils of this Master, Houël, encouraged by an amateur the most distinguished of, Mr. Dazincourt, accepted lessons of Casanova and delivered to the exercise painting without nevertheless neglecting engraving; then, putting at execution the project, that it had formed for a long time, to go to improve in Italy, it obtained a pension of the king and left for Rome with the best recommendations.
Hardly it had posed the foot on this desired ground of the artists, that Houël felt its genius to ignite and increase with the sight of the monuments of the Antiquité and the beautiful sites of this region, that it started to paint with the gouache with a great facility and much of talent. Returned in its fatherland after four years of studies, Houël there made favorably appreciate its manner of painting, especially for the landscapes and the animals and worked in this kind for several cabinets of amateurs of Rouen and Paris. Animated desire to visit Italy one second time, it left again and traversed the kingdom of Naples, the Sicily, the islands of Malta and Lipari. It was in this voyage that it piled up materials of its great picturesque work, works of which, on its return in France, it engraved, according to its own drawings, hundred sixty-four boards with the aquatinte and wrote the explanatory text, which it published of 1782 with 1789 (4 folio volumes).
Houël was aggregate with the Académie of Painting, member corresponding of the Académie of Rouen, the Company of Emulation of the same city, the maconnic Loge of the Last nine Sisters and several learned societies. In addition to its Picturesque Voyage , its principal work, Houël still published: History of the Elephants of your national menagerie , etc, Paris, 1798, in-8°. fig.; Natural history of the two Bull elephants and female of the Natural history museum of Paris , etc, 1798, in-4°, fig.; Explanation of the public building the Column Trajane ; Exposed contest of December 20th, 1807 .
The tables of Houël, which appeared in the first catalogs of the Musée of Rouen, are: Seen Coast of Holy-Catherine, catch of Pre to the Wolves ; Seen entry of the interior of a Cellar cut in the rock, being used as salt warehouse, with Dieppedalle, close to Rouen ; Seen of a known place close to Duclair, vulgarly called the Chair of Gargantua ; Seen Cauchoise Door, in inside of the City, before its demolition .
A portrait of Houël, painted by Vincent, is with the Musée of Rouen; a engraved portrait is also seen in the collection of the Library of the same city.
