Jean-Pierre Dupuy

Jean-Pierre Dupuy (born the February 20th 1941) is polytechnician and Engineer mines and Philosophe of sciences, professor of social and political philosophy to the Polytechnic school and the Université of Stanford in California. He is member of the Académie of technologies.

Biography

Former student of the Polytechnic school, It based the center of cognitive sciences and epistemology of the Polytechnic school (CREATED) in 1982 with Jean-Marie Domenach on the base of preliminary reflections of Jean Ullmo. This center became mixed Unité of research (UMR) in 1987. Right from the start, its vocation was double and related to as well modeling in social sciences (model of car-organization of systems complex as well cognitive, as economic and social) as the philosophy of sciences and, in particular, the epistemology of cognitive sciences.

In 2001, the UMR reorganized and decided to be constituted in a laboratory polyscientific of theoretical cognitive sciences.

Jean-Pierre Dupuy contributed to introduce in France the thoughts of Ivan It as well as Rene Girard.

Part of its work concerns the Nanotechnologie S, which are for him possible “a   tsunami  ” technological to come he studies the perverse effects.

Its international implication

Jean-Pierre Dupuy also counts among the founding members of the ethical, political and scientific Collegium international, association who wishes to bring answers intelligent and suitable until the people of the world vis-a-vis the new challenges of our time wait.

“   One can fix oneself on the scenario of worst not like which can or having to occur in the future but as it could or be supposed occur if such action were undertaken. In the first case, the scenario of worst is about a forecast; in the second it is a conditional assumption in a deliberation which must lead to choose, among all the opened options, the one or the ones that returns this worst acceptable. It is a step " minimax" : to make minimal the maximum damage. However to minimize the worst, it is not to return it nul.
C' is precisely the relevance, even the only existence of the possibility of this scenario of worst which can and must guide the reflection and the action, writing Corinne Lepage. I join this judgment. I fear that this point makes little direction for the managers of the risk.
