Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat , born with Paris the September 5th 1788 and died of the Cholera in Paris June 1832, is a sinologist and Bibliothécaire French.

Biography

Doctor, it studies the Chinese and publishes a Essai on the Chinese language and the literature in 1811. In 1814, it is named professor with the Collège de France, where it is titular pulpit of Chinese and Tartar-Manchu language and literature. He is elected member of the Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities in 1815. In 1824, it is named preserving Eastern manuscripts of the royal Bibliothèque, of which it becomes president of the Academy in 1832. It is one of the founders in 1822 of the Asian Société, of which he is the secretary until his death. It also takes part in the courses of the École of the Eastern languages, attached to the National library.

Sinologist

It defended the idea that Chinese expressed the grammatical relations by the place of the words in the sentence and did not hesitate to evoke a Chinese variation on this subject. In its correspondence with Wilhelm von Humboldt, he explains why Chinese expresses only the relations absolutely necessary for comprehension, contrary to the Indo-European languages. Humboldt ends up lining up with the idea of a formality specific to Chinese, whereas it left the principle that it was the intellect of the speaker who introduced the relations that the Chinese language in itself did not express. One can see in this episode at least as much a page of the history of the relations between France and the Germany which enters the Occident and the China.

Japanologist

Abel-Rémusat was also interested in the Japan and the language Japanese E. In 1820, it publishes a posthumous work of the Dutch japanologist Isaac Titsingh on the history of Japan, the Mémoires and Anecdotes on the reigning Dynasty of the Djogouns .
