C V detailed
It begins its musical studies in its birthplace, Luçon in the Vendée, by the musical theory and the piano. He undertakes then the study of the guitar jazz and traditional as an autodidact, while continuing his studies of musical theory to the academy of the Roche-sur-Yon, where he begins a new instrument: the clarinet. In Paris, its meeting with the Italian guitarist Oscar Ghiglia, assistant of Andrés Segovia, enables him to completely invest in the study the traditional guitar which it will improve with the Brazilian virtuoso, Turibio Santos. Parallel to the instrument, it begins from the studies of writing with the type-setter Christian Gouinguené, whom it will improve later with Yvonne Desportes, type-setter and ex-professor of the National Academy of Music of Paris. Finally he studies the tuba with Gerard Pérez, of the Republican guard.
Ghiglia, exceptional pedagog, are incontestably at the origin of the teaching reflections which lead Jean-Maurice Mourat to be devoted to the improvement of the conditions of teaching of the classes of guitar. It publishes in its expenses a method, “My guitar my friend”, whom it polishes in collaboration with some colleagues interested by this experiment. Then, the result of this project is concretized by the edition of its method, “Six cords… a guitar”, in which it develops the musical pleasure that the pupil will discover in the study, but also the interest which the professor will find to teach. This work, presented in four languages, is always used after more than 30 years and of multiple pullings. In 1992, and on the pressing authorities of the editor, “Six cords… a guitar” will be seen adding a continuation in two volumes treating of the study of all the positions, but also of the techniques of higher level.
In front of a strong demand of candidates increasingly young guitarists, and that one accepts with the instrument without any concept of musical theory, his/her colleagues incite it to write a method even simpler, adapted to less than 10 years. This work, which curiously is voted by plebiscite by the initial adults, jointly teaches the musical formation with the rudimentary study of the guitar; it is entitled “Guitarist… and you?”. Just like “Six cords… a guitar”, this method childish, whose front page is also translated into Japanese, comprises many duets, accustoming the pupil, as of the first notes, to be formed without effort with the chamber music. Since its first publication, this collection is a success which was never contradicted.
The famous rapid acquired by the method “Six cords… a guitar”, attracts the glances of the Musical Consortium - Combre Editions, which invite it to enter their prestigious collection of the Traditional ones: “The traditional piano”; “The traditional flute”, “the traditional violin”, etc This order which it constrained to begin an important research of original works written for the lute, the vihuela and the guitar, the conduit to consult the libraries of various European countries. The result of several years of hard and meticulous work will give rise to volumes has, B, C, D, of “the traditional guitar”. This recompiling of works written for the three above mentioned instruments, but also enriched by transcriptions of works for toothing-stone, harpsichord and piano, covers one eight centuries period: of XIIè at the XXè century. Arranged in a progressive way, tacts with the greatest care, these volumes, diverting for the student, conquered the European market very quickly, with annual sales reaching the 10.000 specimens. Let us stress that this continuation of works will not fail to inspire his/her colleagues, in the collections which will be published as from the Eighties.
Directed before any worms pedagogy, this labor is sown many personal compositions, and in which it takes a care very particular to develop a melody line likely to satisfy the pleasure of the pupils. Thus, of many studies and other parts in didactic matter will be born. Always for its instrument, it composes quite naturally of the works of guitar intended to the soloist and for the chamber music, but does not forget therefore the other instruments. Raul Segura, director of the higher academy of music of Grenade orders to him, in 1997,12 compositions for voice and piano, in order to incorporate them in the books of musical theory intended for the academies of Andalusia.
To this work of type-setter previously evoked, that of arranger is added for which the Billaudot editions invite it to direct the collection “Flute and guitar”, near prestigious names like Jean-Pierre Rampal, Maurice André, Lili Laskine, etc, collection in which it will publish for this duet, more than 70 transcriptions. Named also directing of the collection “the guitar”, it will invite many type-setters to write for these two collections in order to widen the repertory of its instrument.
Thereafter, they are the editions, Hortensia (Leduc), Dubois and Transatlantiques which proposes to him to publish its teaching parts and its works in the concert. In this last editor, he knows since the publication of his collection, 14 mini-studies, a great popularity in the United States of America. But this activity previously presented and which contribute largely to its popularity, it owes it only with its teaching in which it seeks to inculcate in the pupil the pleasure of the study. Its activity of professor begin with teaching from the guitar in a music school from Paris like to the academy from XIIIè district. He is then requested as professor for the opening of several classes of guitar in Paris region. In parallel, one proposes to him the direction of the academy of music of Grigny which he will assume during 16 years. Eight years after this nomination, one asks him to assume jointly, the restoration and the direction of a second academy where there will remain 13 years, after having made approve its establishment by the Ministry for the Cultural Affairs.
Parallel to teaching and with the edition, it develops an important activity of concert performer. After some recitals, it is directed towards the form and chamber music a duet with the flutist Pierre Lambert. In this formation, it will occur in Europe eight consecutive years. Then it creates with Jacques Ballot the Duet guitar and flute of Paris as well as the Trio of guitar of this same city, with Nadine Gibiat and Gerard Verba. It takes part in the musicholiers to give in duet with the flute, or the violin or the viola da gamba, school concerts in Paris and province, and where it will also occur on the lute. He plays regularly with the string quartet, like in the formation lute-harpsichord, guitar-piano, with the pianists Genevieve Méfano, Martine Lablée, Pierre Bouiller, and the harpsichordist Michele Delfosse. With the latter, it will give several concerts to Morocco.
On the lute, which he studies as an autodidact, he is named soloist of the Orchestra of Viroflay, is composed musicians of the National orchestra of France, and is directed by Jean Verdier, itself violonist and altist of this orchestra. In this formation, and the concertos of Vivaldi, he plays ave the flutist Jean-Louis Beaumadier. With its chief, Daniel Martinez, solo violin with the Republican guard and first violin with the Opera of Paris, it creates then the orchestra of the Barley Valley. With this unit, it will occur regularly as a soloist on the lute and the guitar. On the lute élisabéthain and the archiluth, it will be regularly invited to give recitals in the prestigious historical places of Andalusia. The chance of a meeting with the flutist virtuoso, Guy Cottin, is concretized by school concerts, musical interventions, as well as training courses.
On the lute and the guitar, it occurs regularly in Spain with the organist-harpsichordist Andalou Antonio Linares-Lopez. This last will record on a compact disc, Christmas carol of Jean-Maurice Mourat written for organ. This CD was carried out for the Royal Vault of Grenade, on the organ of which it was recorded.
In addition to its activities previously enumerated, it creates 1st at August 15th in training course flute and guitar in Aveyron. Very early, it incorporates the flute and guitar, string quartet in it in order to allow, to work the chamber music in addition to the technique. Thus the training course changes, as of the third year, to become the F.I.M.E., or International festival of Music of Espalion, after having introduced there the training course of guitar of Gerard Verba, with whom it will found the International Contest of Guitar of this same city. Then it moves in Lyon, where the factory of Savarez cords proposes to him to collaborate, by many tests, with the improvement of its products for guitar. For this mark, it also takes part in making of powerful cords, as well on the power as on the quality of the stamp, by the use of revolutionary materials. Since this date, it is sponsored by Savarez, and represents on their premises, one of the French guitarists of world famous, taking part in the publicity of this mark.
In addition, the Filipacchi editions contact it to write in their review, “Guitar stores”, a monthly heading. It will write reports there on the violin makers, his colleagues concert performers, as well as criticisms in concerts, traditional tests of guitars, and naturally on all that refers to its instrument.
Editions V.E.P. (Video Edition Production) propose to him, like with the clarinettist Guy Danguin, professor with the CNSM and clarinet solo with the Orchestra of Paris, a completely new experiment at the time: to record a video course in format VHS. On a world plan, they were pioneers by proposing this audio-visual course which was encensé by the specialized press.
Another experiment arises to him: to write a book. This work which enters the collection By the way “… ”, of the Billaudot editions, is naturally entitled “By the way… of the guitar”. In this book, he writes the summarized history of the traditional guitar, of his origins at our days, but also that of the guitar flamenca, the guitar folk and the guitar jazz. Moreover, it incorporates a short outline of the technical possibilities of the instrument - for the type-setters not guitarists - as well as concepts of modern music and chamber music.
Put separately the European radio programs and of television where it is invited, Jean-Maurice Mourat records its first disc in the formation flute and guitar, with Vendean Pierre Lambert. A few years later, the Arion editions contact it to require of him to engrave two discs for guitar alone. It will record then two other compact discs for the Combre editions.
As of beginning of the year 90, it is impassioned for musical data processing, with an aim of writing itself, on the computer, its own compositions. Its knowledge, acquired as a recluse, will carry out it until the south of Spain, where the Andalusian Junta invites it for the training of the professors of her academies of music. In this part of Spain, it will also give master-class as well as courses teaching and theoretical for the preparation of the candidates for “the oposición of will guitarra”, the Spanish equivalent of a.C. of the French guitarists.
Lastly, let us note that it is regularly invited as jury in the various academies of Paris, Paris region and province. National competitions and international regularly request its presence to govern the deliberations. And to close what refers to the musical part, let us quote Maurice Gévaudan, then President of the FUCMU, National federation of the Academies of Music, which invites it in 1981 to represent France with the Congress European of the Music schools, which proceeded this year with Eisenstadt, town of Haydn, in Austria.
During his career of musician, Jean-Maurice Mourat sees himself giving various decorations, while starting with the town of Schwabach in Germany, following brilliant turned in concerts in 1976. Then it is the mayor of co. Genevieve of the Wood which gives the medal of its city to him, in recognition of the work carried out in its academy, but also compared to the musical activity developed in its city. In 1989, it is the mayor of Torredonjimeno in Spain which gives to him the gold Blazon of its city.
In homage to its important teaching work, recognized well beyond the borders of the hexagon, it is named by the Minister for the Culture, in 1990, Chevalier with the Order of the academic palms. In 2001, and taking into account the teaching work carried out in ten years, it is promoted Officier in the same Order of the academic palms.
In 2002, following the concert which it gives with the flutist Philippe Neureuter within the framework of the Festival of the Océanes Musics, the mayor of Luçon gives the medal of his city to him in homage to his musical course. One holds the honor for him to inaugurate on this occasion, the new concert hall Georges Millandy.
Let us finish this summary bièvement by flying over one of its less known passions, and in which it is invested since a score of years: painting. Apart from his musical activity, Jean-Maurice Mourat also devotes himself to this art, indexing to date more than 150 fabrics. This parallel career was concretized by many exposures to Paris, in province like abroad where its varnishings, during which he only plays or in chamber music, always are very noticed.
