Jean-Marie of Carried out

Jean-Marie of Mennais is a French priest, born with Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine) the September 8th 1780, deceased with Ploërmel (Morbihan) the December 26th 1860.

It founded the congregation of the Frères of the Christian Instruction of Ploërmel in 1819.

Biography

Wire of a ship-owner, Jean-Marie of Mennais is the older brother of Félicité Robert de Lamennais. During the French revolution, it comes to assistance of the priests who refuse to lend oath to the Republic.

Ordered priest the February 25th 1804 with Rennes, he becomes vicar and professor with Saint-Malo during several years.

General vicar of St-Brieuc of 1815 with 1820, it takes an active part in the Christian life of his diocese by supporting the monasteries, by reforming the seminars and by animating popular missions.

Very quickly, it is convinced that education has a role to play in the fight against the déliquance. It decides to train some teachers in 1817. Its meeting with the abbot Gabriel Deshayes with Auray the same year is determining. The June 6th 1819, they found the institute of the Brothers of the Christian Instruction.

In November 1819, Jean-Marie of Mennais is named general vicar of the Great Chaplaincy with Paris.

November 16th 1824, it settles in Ploërmel in an old convent of the Ursulines.
