French philosopher, specialist in Gandhi and the Non-violence, Jean-Marie Muller is director of studies to the Research institute on the non-violent resolution of the conflicts (IRNC).

He is also the founder of the Mouvement for a non-violent alternative. He is member of the committee of sponsorship of the French Coordination for the Decade of the culture of peace and non-violence. He supports, since his creation in 2001, the funds associative Non-Violence XXI.

Jean-Marie Muller was born on October 21st, 1939 in Vesoul (Haute-Saône). He is married and father of two children.

Professor of philosophy until 1970, it then leaves teaching to devote himself full-time to research tasks on non-violence, like with his implementation on the level of information, the formation and the action. Since 1974, it ensures this task in close connection with the Movement for a Non-violent Alternative (MAN) of which it is one of the member-founders and one of the organizers.

In 1967, whereas he is reserve officer, he asks to profit from the statute conscientious objectors. After the refusal of the jurisdictional commission to grant it to him, it returns its military record to the Minister for Defense. It thus expresses its will to assume from now on its civic responsibilities within the framework for a non-violent civil defense. January 8th, 1969, it appears before the Magistrates' court of Orleans which condemns it to three months of suspended sentence, thousand francs of fine and five years of deprivation of its civic rights.

In 1982, it takes part in the Advisory committee created by the Prime Minister in order to establish a dialog on the relative file with the vote of a new law on the conscientious objection. Among the reforms which will be adopted, it is from now on possible to the reservists to obtain the legal statute of the conscientious objectors.

In June 1970, he undertakes, with Jean Desbois, a two weeks hunger strike to protest against the sale of sixteen " Mirage" with the government of the Brazilian generals. This action has a great repercussion in the public opinion and receives support of many movements and personalities.

In 1972, it makes a stay prolonged in the United States where it meets many persons in charge of the American non-violent movements which are then engaged in resistance to the war of Vietnam. It also meets several leaders of the black movement, like césar Chavez, the leader of the fight of the agricultural workers.

In 1973, it takes part in the action of the " Battalion of Paix" carried out in the Pacific to protest against the French nuclear tests. It is, in company of Jacques de Bollardière, Jean Toulat and Brice Lalonde, on FRI board, the boat protestor of the organization " Peace Media" , when this one is hailed by the national marine inside the closed area. When the bomb explodes, it will be held in the military prison of the base of Hao. It will be the last time that the French government will carry out nuclear tests in atmosphere.

From October 25th to 31st 1973, Jean-Marie Muller takes part in Moscow with the World congress of the Forces of Peace.

From February 22nd to 28th 1974, it takes part in Medellin (Colombia) with the " Conference for the non-violent strategy of release in America Latine". It animates then a training seminar on the non-violent action with Riobamba (Ecuador), with the invitation of Mgr Proano, the bishop of the Indians.

From March 12th to 22nd 1975, it remains in Greece. Meetings and conferences on non-violence.

In 1977, it remains two months in India on the traces of Gandhi. In October 1978, Jean-Marie Muller takes part in a four days hunger strike with Lanza del Vasto, Jacques de Bollardière, Jean Toulat, Jean Goss and four peasant () S of Larzac in order to challenge the opinion and the public authorities on the business of the military camp. François Mitterrand visits them and ensures them of its solidarity. In 1981, elected President of the Republic, it will return Larzac to the peasants.

In 1983, the Minister for Defense asks Jean-Marie Muller to lead a study on non-violent civil defense. This study, carried out in collaboration with Christian Mellon and Jacques Sémelin, was published in 1985 by the Foundation for the Studies of National defense under the title civil dissuasion. In 1984, Jean-Marie Muller takes part in the creation of the Research institute on the Non-violent Resolution of Conflicts (IRNC). He is currently the Director of studies. Since 1985, the IRNC takes part in work meetings with representatives of the General secretary of National defense (SGDN). In 1987, Jean-Marie Muller makes a two weeks stay in Poland where it meets the principal leaders of the Solidarité trade union and the Liberté movement and Peace. In 1985, its Stratégie book of the non-violent action had been published in Polish in a clandestine edition.

In August 1988, Jean-Marie Muller, as a foreign consultant of the University of Peace of San Jose (Costa Rica), takes part in a mission charged by the government with Nicaragua with making known with the leaders the theories and the practices of non-violent civil defense.

In September 1990, Jean-Marie Muller, with the invitation of the cultural Social action (ASC), makes a three weeks stay in Lebanon where it takes part in the animation of the " First training course of social teachers in Liban". It goes back to Lebanon in 1991, 1993 and 1997. Several of its books are translated into Arabic and are published in Lebanon.

From October 17th to 22nd 1990, participation in the European Assembly of the Citizens in Prague (Czechoslovakia).

From March 9th to 23rd 1993, it remains in Chad with the invitation of the movement Chad non-violence. It makes a new stay in Chad in February 1994 when it animates two training seminars.

From December 2nd to 6th 1993. Participation and intervention with the European Assembly of the Citizens in Ankara (Turkey).

From April 7th to 14th 1994, Jean-Marie Muller remains in Washington (the USA) where it meets the president of the Republic of Haiti, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and several Haitian political personalities in exile to study the possibility of a non-violent resistance in Haiti which lives then under the military regime of the Cédras general.

From August 21st to 26th 1994, participation in the European Assembly of the Citizens in Bratislava (Czechoslovakia).

From October 27th to 29th 1994, Jean-Marie Muller takes part in Villa of Leyva, in Colombia, with the international Seminar on the negotiation in the armed conflicts. From December 8th to 17th 1994, it takes part in Sao Leopoldo, in Brazil, with Triennial of International of Resistant to War (IRG).

From January 16th to 27th 1997. Stay in Morocco. Meet with Jean-Pierre Shumacher, one of the two survivors of the monks of Tibhirine.

From September 18th to 26th 1998, participation in has triennial International the Resistant ones to the War with Poreč (Croatia).

From October 23rd to November 1st, 1998, participation in a mission of peace in Colombia. With a French delegation, it meets the " communities of paix" area of Uraba.

From January 17th to 26th 2001, Jean-Marie Muller remains in Montreal it gives conferences on non-violence within the framework of the preparation of civil resistance in the Summit meeting of Americas which must be taken place in Canada at next April.

From February 18th to March 3rd, 2001, stay in India. Visit ashram of Gandhi with Ahmedabad.

From February 21st to March 13rd, 2004, stay in Cameroun. Animation of training courses to non-violence with Maroua, Mokolo and Yaounde.

October 16th and 17th 2004, inaugural conference with the Conference on the non-violent action organized in Magdeburg (Germany).

October 30th and 31st 2004, intervention with the Conference on non-violent resistance to San Sebastien (Spain).

From November 18th to 21st 2004, participation and intervention with the conference on the civil intervention with Figuerès (Spain). From December 10th to 14th 2004, stay in Colombia. Intervention with the international seminar organized by the municipality of Bogota on the topic: “Non-violence and civil resistance like instruments for the reconciliation”. December 20th and 21st 2004, Jean-Marie Muller animates a seminar for the students in political science of the University of Pisa (Italy) at the time of the publication in Italian of her book the principle of non-violence.

From January 26th to 31st 2005, Jean-Marie Muller takes part in Porto Alegre (Brazil) with the Worldwide social forum where it gives a conference on the topic “the non-violent option in the social struggles and policies”.

From November 8th to 15th 2005, stay in Sao Paulo (Brazil) with the invitation of association Palas Athena. Conferences at university UNINOVE and the Arts center of Sao Paulo. Animation of a 15 hours seminar.

From December 27th to 30th 2005, participation and intervention with the international meeting on non-violent Palestinian resistance organized to Bethlehem (Palestine).

From January 4th to 9th 2006, with Amman (Jordan), animation of a training course to non-violence for Iraqis working for the promotion of the human rights within the civil society.

From May 13rd to 29th 2006, new stay in Cameroun. On May 16th, 17th and 18th, animation of workshops with Bafoussam. May 16th, public conference with Bafoussam. From May 22nd to 26th, animation of a training course to non-violence with Mbalmayo.

From May 17th to 23rd 2006, stay with Recife (Brazil). May 20th, animation of a workshop. May 21st conference with the Congress of the health and the culture of peace and non-violence.

From October 27th to November 6th, 2006, Jean-Marie Muller remains again in Jordan where it takes part in the animation of two training courses to non-violence for Palestinians, Iraqis, Syrians and the Lebanese one.

From December 7th to 23rd 2006, new stay in Cameroun. Animation of a training course to non-violence with Bafoussam.

Between 1985 and 1992, Jean-Marie Muller was part-time lecturer of the Institute of Political Studies of the University of Lyon where it gave a teaching on the strategy of the non-violent action
