Jean-Marie Fortier

Jean-Marie Fortier (July 1st 1920 - October 31st 2002) was the bishop of the Archidiocèse of Sherbrooke.

Native of Quebec, it receives his ordination with the sacredoce Jean-Marie Villeneuve the June 16th 1944 with the Cathédrale of Quebec.

The November 15th 1960, Jean XXIII appoints it auxiliary bishop of the Diocèse of Holy-Anne-to-the-Pocatière and titular bishop of Pomarie to the Morocco.

The January 19th 1965, Paul VI indicates it like bishop of Gaspé and it is installed the February 17th same year. It makes build the Cathédrale of Gaspé September 14th with the December 8th 1965 and it takes part in the quatième session and the fence of the Concile Vatican II.

Mgr Fortier becomes the Archevêque of Sherbrooke the April 20th 1968, succeeding Georges Cabana. It reaches the presidency of the Conférence of the catholic bishops of Canada of 1973 with 1975.

Mgr Fortier is member of the pontifical Congrégation for the divine worship and the pontifical Commission for the social communications. It governed itself ten episcopal dedications.

In 1985, it pronounces the Homélie funeral of Madeleine Guay, the wife of the liberal chief Claude Ryan. In 1987, it also pronounces the funeral praise of the Prime Minister Rene Lévesque. The same year, as a president of the Parliament of the bishops of Quebec, it raises the sanctions imposed on the Patriotes of 1837.

The June 14th 1994, it is honoured by the deputy Carmen Juneau with the National Assembly with Quebec at the time of the fiftieth year with sound presbytérat

Having exceeded the seventy-five years age, he resigns on July 1st 1996 and settles in Quebec. He had been archbishop during twenty-eight years. Mgr Fortier dies the October 31st 2002.

Its successor with Sherbrooke is Mgr André Gaumond, which chaired its funeral the Saint-Michel Basilica-cathedral of Sherbrooke.

The diocese of Sherbrooke created the Foundation Jean-Marie Fortier in her honor. The Séminaire of Sherbrooke also created Funds Jean-Marie Fortier in her memory.
