Jean-Louis Ferrand
Jean-Louis Ferrand , born with Besancon in 1753, military French.
It made, like volunteer, in America, the Guerres of independence. Of return in France, it entered a regiment of dragons; he was major in 1793. Decree then like Fayettiste, it was freed after Thermidor 9. Named soon Brigadier general, it ordered with the armies of the West, the Ardennes and Sambre-and-Meuse.
With the Peace of Amiens, it ordered the Département of the Pas-de-Calais, and belonged to the Expédition of Santo Domingo. In less than four months, this colony was subjected, but, in November 1802, a general insurrection burst; the yellow fever carried the general Leclerc, Ferrand was charged to defend the French part of the colony. Invested by Dessalines with the head of 22.000 blacks, it beat it the March 18th 1803.
Ferrand was maintained during nearly five years, and showed administrator and warrior. With the rupture between the France and the Spain, the governor of Puerto Rico caused to him an insurrection, the November 7th 1808, Ferrand, with the head of 500 soldiers, was attacked by more than 2.000 rebels. The first shock was terrible. Soon the enemy cavalry overflowing the two wings of the French column, the rows were broken, the majority of the officers and the soldiers were killed, and the remainder flees. Ferrand, tiny room to despair, were then made jump the brain of a blow of gun.
