Jean-Joseph Gaume

Jean-Joseph Gaume (protonotaire apostolic, Mgr) (1802 - 1879) was a Théologien and a writer French.

Born with Fuans in the Doubs, in Franche-Comté, it was attached to the Diocèse of Nevers as a director of the Petit seminar, canon and general Vicaire and had already published several works in 1841, when it left for Rome. Fact Doctor of Divinity with the University of Prague, it was named apostolic Protonotaire in 1854 by Pie IX.

He is the author of many books concerning the Théologie, the Histoire and the education. Those of the first category were estimated a long time, those of the second fell into the lapse of memory and those of the third gave place to the famous question of the traditional ones.

Worried by the religious questions of its time, he believed to find that the cause of the evils of the XIXe century was the reintroduction of the pagan texts in the catholic colleges at the time of the Renaissance. He unscrewed a new manner of forming youth and the childhood, which mainly consisted in more teaching the Christian authors in the traditional ones; for that it composed in particular the Catéchisme of Perseverance . The whole of its ideas received the qualifier of gaumism .

It was particularly intransigent towards the Révolutionnaire S, the Libéraux, the Socialiste S and the Franc-maçons. Its work the Revolution takes again the theses Conspirationniste S of the Abbé Barruel, explaining the events of 1789 by a plot maconnic.

He lived a long time under the protection of Mgr Bracket and Mgr Parisis, bishops of Rheims and Arras. But especially, it found supports in the articles of Louis Veuillot in the Universe. Very printed, it had even its defenders with the Canada, of which especially Alexis Pelletier which gained Henri-Raymond Casgrain with his cause.

Mgr Dupanloup, the moderate bishop of Orleans, reproached him for breaking with the tradition of the Church which privileged a Christian interpretation of the pagan works since the Concile of Thirty. Its partisans maintained their claims, but Rome finally had to put an end to the controversy. He died in 1879.
