Military career
Revolutionary wars
He takes part in June 1794 in the Bataille of Fleurus, as a Brigadier general on a purely provisional basis. This " provisoire" , allotted in January 1794, is confirmed in September, and is prolonged until November, date on which it passes brigadier general on a purely final basis. It is with the catch of Düsseldorf in 1795, where the city will be bombarded, before the French Army does not shave its fortifications.
Armed with Italy
Following the Battle of Novi, it is charged to direct the retirement of artillery as far as France.
Santo Domingo
Debelle is indicated on December 7th, 1801, a few days only before the departure of the fleet, to order artillery of the forwarding of Santo Domingo under the command of the general Charles Victor Emmanuel Leclerc. Shortly after the unloading in the Cape (February 4th, 1802), it is put at the head of a rescue party sent to release the general Jean Joseph Amable Humbert with Port-of-Peace, but it is beaten in its turn by the Haitian general Maurepas (February 17th). Into his report/ratio with leclerc, Debelle rejects all the responsibility for this expensive attack on Humbert, while at the same time this one, scalded by its preceding failures, had vainly tried to moderate its heats. Humbert nevertheless is placed at the stops on board French fleet, then returned later to France where it will be put in retirement. Once Maurepas made its tender with leclerc, Debelle launches out to the continuation of the general Jean-Jacques Dessalines: letting itself once again carry by its impetuous temperament, he ventures under the walls of the Peak-with-Pierrot and is seriously wounded (March 2nd). Evacuee, it reorganizes then the artillery (May 2nd) and tries to be opposed to the generalized plundering of the colony by the officers of the task force (June 1st) in an address with the army which will remain dead letter… He falls ill (approximately on June 12th) and dies, undoubtedly of yellow fever, in Saint-Raphaël (June 15th), at the 34 years age.Opinion of all the chroniclers, Debelle was the “Apollo of the army” (the Sarrazin general even affirms that he dies during a “ part of pleasure ” with a mongrel), but was far from being also large thinker that seducer…
He was the friend and the brother-in-law of the Hoche general, and the brother of the general César Alexandre Debelle.
