Jean-François Graindorge

Jean-François Graindorge , born on July 1st 1772 with Holy-Cross (Handle), is a French soldier.

He entered to the service the September 20th 1791 as lieutenant to the formation of the 1st battalion of the volunteers of the Orne, become 37e half-brigade of infantry of line, and made the wars of 1792 with 1793 with the Armée with North.

The June 11th 1792, in a business which took place close to Grissole, in front of Maubeuge, it was wounded of a shot to the right thigh. The September 8th 1793, with the Battle of Hondschoote, it seized one fears placed on the road and accepted there a shot through the body. The 9 of the same month, to Bergues, it contributed to the catch of fear which defended the approaches of this place, in spite of the flood which covered the ground with more than one quarter of mile. A great number of English who defended them were taken or killed, and all their artillery fell to the capacity from the French. The same day, while entering the city, it accepted a new shot through the body. At the time of the Battle of Neuwied, it made all the captive garrison and seized the artillery which defended this position.

Named captain the 8 vendémiaire year II, it took share with the operations of the Armée with Sambre-and-Meuse during years II, III, IV and V, and accepted four blows of saber including three on the head and one on the left arm during the Blocus of Charleroi. The 19 fructidor year III, in the passing of the the Rhine, it was reached of a shot to the left knee. The 14 messidor year IV, to the new passage of this river, Neuwied, it entered the first fear enemy, and was named major on the battle field, by the general-in-chief Hoche. This nomination was confirmed by decree of the executive Directoire of the 5 messidor An V.

The general-in-chief Masséna, witness of the control of the commander Graindorge, appointed it chief of brigade on the battle field. Employed with the Armed with the Rhine in the Year VIII and the Year IX, it ordered the avant-garde of this army, the 3 vendémiaire An VIII, with the passage of the Limoth, where it removed several pieces of ordnance and five flags with the Russians.

Named one second time chief of brigade following this day, it was placed in this quality, the 16 brumaire following, with the head of the 36e, become 36e regiment of line; it was confirmed in its rank by decree of the First Consul of the 29 vendémiaire year IX. It held garrison with Aachen during years X and XI, and was employed with the Camp of Saint-Omer during years XII and XIII.

Member of the Legion of honor the 19 frimaire year XII, and officer of the Order the 25 meadow following, it was named Brigadier general the 12 pluviôse year XIII, and was employed in division the 11 ventôse, then with the reserve of infantry, Lille, the 29 floréal of the same year.

Ordering a brigade of the 2nd division of the 5th body of the Large army, during the campaigns of the Year XIV, it fought with Dürenstein the 20 brumaire year XIV, with Saalfeld on October 10th, 1806, Bataille of Iéna, where it was wounded, the 14 of the same month, with Pultusk the next on December 26th, with Ostrovno and Stanislasvowa the 3 and February 15th 1807. The 16 of the same month, with Ostrołęka, Savary, general-in-chief of the 5th body of the Large army, ordered to the Graindorge general, ordering the outposts of this body, to tackle the Russian division which had given an opinion with Rossaga. The Graindorge general began the attack with the battalion of the light 21e which it made support by the 2nd battalion and the 100e regiment of line. Nothing resisted the impetuosity of these troops and their intrepid chief; everywhere they collapsed the enemy, continued it during two miles, killed to him and wounded close to: 2000 men, made prisoners, took 3 parts of gun and a flag. All this brigade covered glory. Employed to the body of observation of the the Gironde the October 15th 1807, it passed to the 8th body of the Armée with Spain, the November 17th 1808, and was useful since this moment in Spain and with the Portugal. Created baron of the Empire in 1808, it was made commander of the Legion of honor, the August 21st 1807, in reward of its honourable services.

Seriously wounded in the Battle of Buçaco (Portugal), the September 27th 1810, it died of the continuations of its wounds the next on October 1st, with Carquejo.

Its name is registered on the Triumphal arch of the Star, west coast.
