Jean-François Carteaux (1751 - 1813), born with Gouhenans in Haute-Saône, the January 31st 1751, died in Paris, the April 12th 1813, general of the army-Frenchwomen

Wire of a dragon to the Regiment of Thianges, it was high in the garrisons and followed his father to the Hôtel of the Invalids where it accepted an education similar to his position. The painter Senior having noticed in the Carteaux young person of the provisions for the drawing, took it under his protection and made him make rather fast progress.

However its taste dominating for the military career made it serve a few years in several regiments. It returned later to take again the pallet and the brushes, made several tables of history and battles which were noticed, and traversed then several regions of Europe.

Returned in France, at the time of the French revolution, it embraced the principles with heat, and became of them, in July 1789, assistance-of-camp of the general ordering the Place of Paris. It did not give up therefore its artistic activity and carried out an equestrian portrait of Louis XVI in 1791.

Appointed lieutenant in the Parisian national guard, it was distinguished in the course of the day from the August 10th 1792, obtained initially the rank of adjudant-general, and became then commander of a division of the Armée with the Alps.

Sent against the insurrectionists of the Midday, it beat them in several meetings and forced them to disperse.

Indicated by the Convention to direct the army of Head office of Toulon in 1793. It installs its general headquarter in the country house of Montauban, with Ollioules, of which the sight dominates the Rade of Toulon.

It left this command to pass successively to those of the Armée with Italy and the Armée with the Alps.

Stopped to Marseilles by order of the Committee of public hello, it was transferred and contained with the Conciergerie the January 2nd 1794.

Returned with freedom after the day of Thermidor 9, the government gave him the command of a body of observation in Normandy, intended to support the army of the general Hoche in the West. Relieved a little later he protested vigorously against this act, was reinstated in his rank, and defended the Convention with the 13 vendémiaire year IV (October 1795).

The First Consul named it, in 1801, one of the administrators of the national Loterie, and entrusted to him, in 1804, the provisional administration of the Principauté of Piombino.

Returned to France in 1805, it obtained from the Emperor a retirement pension, and lived since entirely far away from the businesses.

He died in 1813.
