Jean-François (slave of Santo Domingo)
Jean-François was a Esclave of Saint-Domingue, hero of the Haitian Révolution.
He was one of the main leaders of the insurrection of the slaves of the Northern of the August 22nd 1791, following the meets Wood-Caiman, first act of the revolt of the slaves which would lead the loss by the France of its richer colony.
Fleeing the repression of the white, it gained the oriental party of the island, under Spanish domination with its troops, in which soon an officer pointed, All Saints' day Breda, which will acquerra the nickname of Louverture. It joined Spanish, entered in war in 1793 against the French Republic. He did not believe that French, even republican, would abolish slavery. Chief of the indigenous army, it contributed to the occupation of an important part of Santo Domingo. He proclaimed soon " Lord High Admiral de France". Spanish named it general.
In front of the rise to power of All Saints' day, which started to carry shade to him, it decided, with its second Georges Biassou, to foment an attack in 1794. All Saints' day escaped from it, but his/her young brother perishes there.
He fought All Saints' day when this one joined in France in May 1794. In a few months, it was beaten and its troops driven back at the Eastern border of Santo Domingo.
The treated of Basle of 1795 put an end to its career. It was withdrawn in Spain. He died in Cadiz in 1822.
