Biography

An early vocation

Jean-David Morvan lives during nine years with Versailles before returning to Rheims. It was the beginning of the era Glénat, which did not leave whereas a data base per month.

The band of buddies

He redoubles its 4th and misses his vat once, but as he is of November he gives the impression to be only one year old of delay. (“I was then a little afraid of girls and in the content, I was interested only in the data base”) In 4th, it meets Christian Lerolle, one of both Color Twins, and in second Final Franck Guréghian, other half of the duet. In 2 it becomes acquainted with Sylvain Savoia, with which it starts to collaborate in the Fanzine Except Gabarit . With them two they monopolize the pages quickly of them (“It was a good formation”). In the team of this fanzine it meets some Yann Gall with whom it invents the world of Zorn & Dirna, which will be drawn a few years later by Bruno Bessadi and Vincent Trannoy to appear in the editor Sun. In the competitor fanzine Jab Jab Whamo prevailed then, future collaborator with whom it carries out - “to laugh” - a crossover of 120 pages between Batman and Wolverine making following The Dark Knight Returns of Frank Miller.

The training

In 1989, it and part of his/her friends enter to the École Saint-Luc of Brussels. He there goes to learn the trade there from draftsman, dries the courses, stops drawing, and will come out from it with the certainty that it is made to be a scenario writer. At that time, certain Éliane of the bookseller of Brussels Forbidden World enables him to meet a certain number of professionals of the trade: Rif Reb' S, Denis Bodart, Thierry Robin, Qwack… It is as in this bookstore as it starts to buy many comic book, the period there prétand (reign there then as Masters Frank Miller, Alan Moore and David Mazzucchelli, while the editor Marvel publishes the Manga Akira colors). He discovers also a Japanese bookstore where he buys Dragon Ball and Gunnm (“They cost 210 francs Belgian, I remember it”). Definitively wearied School Saint-Luc, him and his friends decide to go to the festival Villeneuve D' Asc to present to the editor Zenda - then independent - projects of albums for which he had improvised scenario writer.

“With Jab Jab Whamo, one had imagined a history of Science-fiction in which dinosaurs soldiers attacked a planet of sados masos human. It was very trash. There was to be two albums and the title of the series it was Profond like hatred . A whole program. ”

With Yann Gall it presents the first version of Zorn & Dirna , much improved since. With Sylvain Savoia he proposes lost Reflets , “which were accepted, with our great surprise and our great pleasure. ” The following year, it passes the contest of the fine arts. “But I only thought of working on the projects. I was transfered for non-assistance with the courses in danger. ” Between February and November 1992 it makes its Military service with Mourmelon-the-Large as a post orderly.

Beginnings

Whereas the 1st album of lost Reflets was going to appear at Zenda, this editor is repurchased by Glénat. It is at the latter that Jean-David Morvan sign Horde , drawn by Jab Jab Whamo. Finally lost Reflets is sold with 1.200 specimens, the remainder going to provide the vats of the remainder buyers. But at this same period Glénat starts to publish Akira in France, which to find its public. One their directors of collection: Jean-Claude Camano (also discoverer of Titeuf ), then wishes to launch French series in this mobility. Then begin with Sylvain Savoia the insane bet NOMAD : 136 colors pages every six months. The two authors decide to work with the Japanese woman and engage Philippe Buchet, director artistic of an agency of communication in which also Sylvain Savoia (“It worked was a fan of Science-fiction, that fell well. He put himself at the design and at crayonné of the technos pages”).

In the tread, Jean-Claude Camano receives the file of a young draftsman named Kévin " Trantkat" Herault. “It had already developed an enough universe of science fiction and the format of this new collection interested it. We met, I melted ourselves in the world of Karl Hollister, its hero, and HK was born”. Thierry Trübe collaborates in the scenario of the 1st volume, while Vincent Trannoy (one of the two draftsmen of Zorn & Dirna ) deals with the decorations.

One day while returning of a festival, it is asked to him whether it can accompany back a young author named Joann Sfar on Paris. It is at the time of the way that the two accomplices will sympatiseront and provide the foundations of the series Troll , of which they will cosigneront the first three volumes, leaving with Olivier Boiscommun the load of the drawing. This data base will constitute its first contract with the editor Delcourt.

Dedication

After having collaborated in the two first NOMAD , Philippe Buchet informs Jean-David Morvan of his desire for drawing its own series. It leaves its job of artistic director then to launch out to body lost in the adventure of the data base the large farandole of the refused projects will last one year, time to empty all its economies. Finally it is with the festival of Sierre that Guy Delcourt will order a series of Space to them operated. “The word Sillage trottait me in the head since step badly of years, we built all around him. ”

NOMAD and HK meets already a certain best-seller, but the sales of Sillage will take off as of the 1st volume. “No editor could be unaware of it”. Jean-David Morvan benefits from it then to arise its old projects, previously refused everywhere, but in which he still believes. He alters them, and begins a period ostentation then: the editors tears off it. Thus 7 Seconds finds taking at Delcourt with the drawing old of the École Saint-Luc: Gerald Parel, while Zorn & Dirna with Bruno Bessadi and Vincent Trannoy is carried out at Sun.

It is at that time that it meets José-Shine Munuera, Spanish who will become one of his more frequent collaborators. Together they create for the Lanfeust Mag of the short stories of very haughty the mythecin general practitioner Sir Pyle S. Culape , which often looks after the monsters towards and against themselves. Later his/her friend Joann Sfar will propose to him to take again the scenario of his series Merlin which already draws José-Shine Munuera. This last draws also the adventures of Nävis , Spin-off intended for the children of the series Sillage , in which Jean-David Morvan and Philippe Buchet takes a malicious pleasure to tell the youth of their heroin. And as that is not enough, when Jean-David Morvan is charged by the editor Dupuis with taking again the historical series Spirou and Fantasio , it is again Spanish who ensures the drawing.

A prolific author

Among his many projects one can quote the Cycle of Tschaï with Li-Year, adaptation of a series of novels of Jack Vance, Mandiguerre with Italian Stefano Tamiazzo, Jolin the tinea with Spanish Rubén, Reality Show with Francis Porcel, Trop of happiness with Steven Lejeune, Al' Togo with Sylvain Savoia, I died with Nicolas Nemiri, Meka and The Only One (TOO) , with Bengal, Nirta Omirli with Bachan, and Three… and the angel with Pedro Colombo.

  • the second volume of Bunker Baby Fraud contains in foreword “very freely inspired of a history of Jean-David Morvan ”, because the draftsman, Fabrice Jarzaguet, largely rewrote the scenario without the assent of the scenario writer.
  • Jean-David Morvan division his initial with the draftsman Jidéhem, although for this one this pseudonym means “Jean de Mesmaeker”.
