Jean-Daniel Œhlert

Jean-Daniel Œhlert , known as Large-Pierrot the or the Large-German (° July 6th 1765 Ostheim - † December 5th 1814), is a soldier who illustrated himself particularly at the time of the Chouannerie in Mayenne.

Chouannerie

Born with Ostheim in the Haut-Rhin, Jean-Daniel Œhlert engages with the regiment of Alsace the August 6th 1787. Incorporated in the 5th battalion of Haut-Rhin, named captain the September 16th 1792, and after having taken share with 52 engagements, it comes in the Mayenne with a frank company to make the war with the Chouans.

Foreigner with the country like the majority of his men, it includes/understands however better than anybody the war of partisans for which it is necessary to face. The royalist general Claude-Augustin Tercier, who was almost daily with the catches with him, with various chances, recognizes it like a frightening and imperceptible adversary. The March 26th 1796 with Bazougers, one finds it in April which fights with Juvigné, then to Castle-Gontier, again in the country of Vaiges which most extremely gives him to make in May, and on June 9th until Domfront to hasten the disarmament of the insurrectionists. After pacification, Œhlert, named major the September 14th 1796, is destined for Paris; it enters the guard of the Directoire (8 frimaire An V), is charged to stop Carnot after the Coup d'etat of the 18 fructidor year V, returns to Laval with the rank of general lieutenant, claimed by the administration against the new rising of the Mécontents . It carries out the fight with the same activity.

But the July 29th 1799, between Lassay and Ambrières, to the Chesnay (Cigné), it falls reached from two balls to the left thigh and a third in the foot. Oléron

Since then major in the Guard of the Consuls (13 nivôse An VIII), higher adjudant, chief of brigade (4 brumaire An IX), ordering with the island of Oléron, where the abbot Jacques Fleury saw it always limping, it took its retirement to the 29 brumaire An XII. It there still organized the company of reserve and the service of recruitment, ordered the department during the last years of the Empire, and died the December 5th 1814, " not having more ennemis" , " one of the most honest soldiers of the armée" .
