Jean-Claude Zylberstein
Born in Paris on November 17th 1938, Jean-Claude Zylberstein is a lawyer, Journaliste and editor French.
Biography
Raised in a family of small shopkeepers of Jewish origin and in front of hiding during the Occupation, it draws from the reading from the magazine the Illustration a taste for the literature which directs it initially more worms of the classic authors (the Comtesse of Ségur, Jules Verne, Jack London, Alexandre Dumas) that detective novels.Raise with the colleges Voltaire (Paris) and Lakanal (Seals), it follows initially scientific studies and leaves there with a certificate physics, chemistry and biology. It is reorientated then in Droit but will obtain its diploma for the occupation of lawyer only in 1973. In the interval its passion for the letters led it to become a time the secretary of Jean Paulhan, it is thus not for its competences in royalties that it will reinstate the medium of the edition.
Thus, its first work in the edition had consisted in launching, for the Circle of the invaluable book, the first volume of complete works of Jean Paulhan. It is besides on this occasion that it had become acquainted with Guy Dumur, then in the search of somebody to deal with heading “detective novels”. While continuing its episodical collaborations with the literary Magazine , with France-Evening or Combat , it thus enters to the Nouvel Observateur in May 1967. There, in addition to the detective novels, it will ensure until 1986, generally in an anonymous way (but it remains in the bear of the newspaper) criticism of the discs of Jazz. These activities will open the doors of the edition to him: initially reader at], it accomplishes then a short stay with the Presses of the City which it leaves in 1970 to take again his studies of right.
Become lawyer at the Court of Appeal of Paris as from 1973, it will make its training course at Georges Kiejman and it will plead mainly in businesses of slandering and private life, and punctually in businesses of plagiarism. But its passion will be the defense of the creators: of Salman Rushdie with Francoise Sagan, of Yves Navarre with Daft Punk or succession of Jacques Brel. Legal adviser of the Company of the readers of Jean Paulhan as from 1977, it is also, as from 1980, at the legal committees of the Société of the men of letters and the SACD.
To advise literary with the the Book of Pocket of 1970 to 1975 and with the editions of the Free field of 1973 to 1977, it becomes in 1976 to advise edition at Julliard. But its meeting since 1970 with the managing director of the books group of Hatchet, Bernard de Fallois, which then sought a literary adviser for the police paperback, will lead it in 1980 to work for the editions 10/18 within the group of the Presses of the City whose Fallois having left Hachette became the managing director. The best of its career of editor is now in front of him: with Christian Bourgois - of which it is to advise arts person for his own publisher -, it directs her leading strategy towards the republication of forgotten works and the opening to the foreign romantic fiction. It thus launches the year even of its arrival a new collection (“foreign Field”) in order to make (Re) discover the best texts of the contemporary international fiction.
One year later, it launches another police collection, “Large detectives”, to publish new authors (such Ellis Peters, Lilian Jackson Braun or Robert van Gulik) or somewhat forgotten (like Dashiell Hammett, William Irish). But it has also the idea to propose there the image of a “positive hero anti black series which bring back the order, in a world, where the crime produced a species of chaos”. This new direction then obliges it to leave its functions at Julliard more especially as, the previous year, it became part-time lecturer in right of the cinema in Paris I - Sorbonne. In 1986, it leaves its university functions and gives up its collaboration with the Nouvel Observateur where it continued to ensure the criticism of the discs of jazz. It then will enter, for eight years, at the Editorial board of Earth. Later it will appear in the Editorial board of the rules of the game the review of Bernard-Henri Levy and will take part in the transitory review the Reader of Samuel Brussel.
Officer in the orders of Arts and letters and the Merit, it received the cross of officer of the Légion of honor of the hands of Hubert Védrine, then Foreign Minister with the Palate of Orsay in September 2000.
Today its cabinet is famous for its competences in the whole of culture industries: edition of book under its various aspects, audio-visual, music, graphic arts. By decree of January 1st, 2007, the Minister for the Culture and Communication, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, promoted it Commandeur in the Orders of Arts and the Letters in his capacity as lawyer at the Court of Appeal of Paris.
At the end of March 2007, at the time of the Living room of the Book, Zylberstein creates with the Tallandier Editions a new collection with the small size " Texto" under titrated " taste of the histoire" (the editor offered a Web site to him) is devoted to the History with in particular republications of works become untraceable like French history of Jacques Bainville and the resumption of fundamental texts like Of the ordinary men of C. Browning or the fall of Constantinople of S. Runciman and a Sénèque of Paul Veyne.
